Date(s) Skied: 2/23/06 (night)

Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett Mountain

Conditions: Packed to loose pow on hardpack

Trip Report:

I regained a little love for Wachusett last night... I feel like the heroin junkie that just got a real good fix.

I met up with a college bud around 6. I was actually out earlier, but he managed to find me on the slopes. Friggin' eagle eyes I swear.

We stayed on the Polar Express summit quad the whole night, as is norm for me. I started off my night on Smith, and the snow was surpisingly good! And there was a lot of it! The temperatures hovered around 29 at the base, 24 at the summit all night. Tenth and Conifer were both similar in terms of conditions. Plenty of soft stuff that just skied like a dream

And not only was the snow good, but, despite being a vacation night, the place was empty. It was ski on, ski off the whole night. I would have attributed it to the drizzle and otherwise lousy weather earlier in the day, but on my way to the main parking lot, I saw the auxilliary lots open and people leaving, so it def. was busy during the day. I don't know. And I don't care. All I know is that it was a good night.

And the best part of it came when I discoverd they had freshly reseeded the bumps on tenth, and they were in desperate need too. They were a little hard in the troughs but the bumps themselves were pretty soft. It's an irregular pattern because of a slight fall line to the skiers right accompanying the main fall line down the hill. I guess they seed them purpously irregular. I think it's a little too offset, but they're def. skiable.

I started standing a little taller, making softer pole plants and more and more I controlled my speed with abosorption rather than sliding. That is a very cool feeling let me tell you. I was totally hooked. I skied them a lot.

And I'm going back for more tonight. Sorry Greg, but Wa is closer to me then Sundown by about forty minutes, has more vert, and I have my season pass. Otherwise I would come out with you guys.

Other highlights of the night:
-Marc leaning heavy coming in for a fast stop, successfully stopping, but failing to stand back up straight and falling over onto his side
-Marc getting passed by a Ranger on Conifer, then later down the trail the same Ranger warns Marc to slowdown...?
-Marc falling in the moguls on the second run, releasing a ski, his college bud grabbing it for him, Marc attempting to ski down 20 feet on one ski... falling several more times in the process
-Marc almost falling and taking out an entire ski rack on the iced of deck outside the lodge

Are you staying for the whole night tonight? I can't wait. 16 straight hours for me coming up. No way I can do all 24.

I forgot that was tonight. Crap, I hope it isn't real crowded because of that.

Nah, I have to get up early tomorrow morning for training at the firehouse, I probably won't stay much past 10:30...
