Resort or Ski Area: Wachusett, MA
Conditions: Firm and Spring, Sunny, 30s
Trip Report:
Set a new personal record of 39 days today with a fun couple hours at Wachusett. Had a half-day at school, so I headed out from there and skied 12:30-3. It was chilly, but the sun was enough to soften up much of the mountain. A few cool pockets stayed firm from yesterday's showers. Decent crowd for a Friday midday.
Balance Rock/Conifer: Upper Balance still has pretty good cover for this late in the year. It may make it another week or so, especially if it stays cool out like it was today. Roper's is completely gone. Lower Balance is almost gone with more brown than while and a lot of bamboo poles. Conifer was nice and soft on the sides with hardpack in the middle.
10th/Salamander: Bumps were soft on the tops but the troughs were solid. The lines sucked and last week's snowmaking really screwed them up. Salamander still has good cover and lower 10th was fast in the shade and soft in the sun.
Smith: Steep was pretty ugly with lots of ice and base, but no ground yet. Lower had a lot of random bumps that threw you for a loop if you hit them at speed. Polar was in normal speed and ski on.
Hitchcock/Frannies: Upper Hitchcock is only half covered now, but is usually the first big trail to close. Frannie's was also a mess, but somehow the rails and boxes are still there (some of them look ready to tip over).
Look Ma: Still surprisingly good. Not many changes at all. Getting thin in the area of the second big jump which may lead to the flattening of one of the features, but the rest of the park was in really nice shape. Good to see them keeping up with the weather. Minuteman was in normal speed and ski on.
I may make it up at some point next week, but I'm going to Boston twice and have some big projects in school due so we'll see. If not, my next days will be MRG and Sugarbush next Sunday and Monday.
