Conditions - loose packed powder, a little chilly
Had to leave work early to take one of my kids to the dentist. So seemed like a good idea to take the afternoon off, and take advantage of the recent snow storm and head to Wachusett. Everything didn't go according to plan though. The dentist was just supposed to clean his teeth, but decided to adjust his braces too, making his teeth hurt and delaying our departure. Then I picked up my other son and he had a headache. My wife was going to meet us there, but called and said she had too many meetings and couldn't cut work after all.
But there was no stopping me since I had a new pair of skis to break in, so I didn't let those minor setbacks derail the trip. We got there about 4:30, wind was going a bit and the temps were a little chilly. We were ready for it though, so no problem. We geared up and I wanted to start on the crazy easy green trails Wachusett has to see how my new skis were going to work. I'd just ordered them off the internet after a little research, so had no real idea what they would be like (Volkl AC20's). I forgot how punishingly slow that triple is on the left side of the mountain. A couple runs over there were all we could stand and the new skis seemed to be working fine. So we moved to the fast quads, which was a relief.
The snow was nice tonight. Fairly loose packed powder for the most part, and a little scruncy with the cold temps. I only saw one small patch of ice all night, so the snow storm did it's job over there. The crowd was light, with no more than a couple car wait around 6 pm or so, but for the most part virtually no wait at all.
It's the first time I went to Wawa this season. It's much the same as I remembered it, some reasonably good trails, and lots of teens and pre-teens on snowboards. Well with the light crowd they weren't very bothersome, so me and boys got in a lot of pleasant runs. I had to leave around 9pm, since the kids had to get home to finish some homework, otherwise I would have preferred to keep going until it closed. I doubt there are a lot more snowstorms left this year.
