That's pretty cool, and quite remarkable that a tourist managed to capture it. But, yeah the goose chasing the dog was even better!

Not really. The boat is a hard chine steel hull, When the whale fell on it, the boat partially rolled, and most of the force of the impact was transferred to the ocean, ie the water, a very fluid medium. Steel plate is pretty strong. Ocean going cruising sailboats are built to a much stronger standard than coastal boats.

While it looks like the entire rig needs to be replaced, you also have to keep in mind that labor rates might be lower in SA, and not cost as much as we are used to here.

We had about 50+ whales around us on the boat today off Chatham, awesome sight. Breaching, fully out of water shows. As mister moose said, that boat is a rugged hull, would take muc
h more to take it down. I laughed at the $5k in damage reported by the reporter on TV, I bet $50k+, mast/rigging isn't cheap.
