I had two experiences with the hunter Mountain ski school and both were bad. The second incident involved my son lying down on the beginner slope after a fall, and the instructor refusing to help him get up, my wife was really pissed.

I pulled him out of his lesson and he was skiing just fine with me for the rest of the day.

My son has his own equiptment, so I cannot speak for the rental department.

As much as I like Hunter, the instructors leave alot to be desired, no offense to DMC.

why would I take offense...
Your only talking about a bunch of my friends -including JimG.. :)

I've spoken to loafer about his son's bad experience there...he got an instructor who just shouldn't be teaching kids, period.

Classic example of a one or two bad experiences spoiling someone's perception of a mountain. My son Peter had one just like that. It was the last lesson he took at Hunter and it was the end of the last season I taught there. I've been coaching my kids since then.

However, this season both my older boys will be in seasonal programs at Hunter. They're older now and respond very well to coaching.

From LI for a day-trip....Hunter Mountain...

It's close, has an area for beginners, one lodge, and it's a mountain where LI families go so when they go back to school, their conversations with their non-scouting friends has some relevance...

Actually it has 2 lodges now...
The learning Center has it's own lodge,cafeteria..
Where you can watch your kids take lessons from inside..

It's nice...

.......teaching your kids at the Bush.. How's their learning center?

Well my kids have been in the seasonal programs for a few years and they have had great coaches.

Part of the whole Bush saga lately has been the impending creation of the new learining center. This year it is being housed in temporary buildings, but they are to be centrally located into a learning "village".

But aside from that I agree the bush does suck, way too many trees for good skiing.

See you there.

Sounds like Hunter used to be a few years ago when the children's programs were "housed" in a trailer.
That was really weak and the learning center has been a huge improvement.

Yeah, SB really sucks, especially that area that's your namesake. Don't understand why I keep going back every year.

Where on Long Island?

I would not recommend Mountain Creek on the weekend. Nor would I say Camelback on the weekend.

But everything from Long Island is a hike, and I would imagine that or Hidden Valley are your closest Hills.

Try Jack Frost....but that's gotta be 3 hours.

From the middle of Long Island To Vernon is about 2 hours and 16 minutes. I don't know what would be closer.

Sugarbush is too expensive for a group.

Do the Pats Peak weekend. Lot of fun and not expensive. The folks were great to deal with at the mountain--they were really great. They handle it all and want your business. Long drive, yeah, but friendly place and it can be a weekend.

Otherwise look to the Vermont Boy Scout Council for ski trips. We book them for scout troops like you.

She's South Nassau ... Stones throw from Jones Beach, If I remember correctly. My vote is still Mountain Creek and to get there around 2PM. It's the closest and it's a real timid mountain.

That being said, I saw some negativity about Hunter's instructors .... My wife had the best lesson of her life there. Her skiing was great until her shmuck husband (me) decided she was good enough to ski belt parkway down. She was doing fine unti she came across a guy who broke his collar bone half way down. It was back to pizza slices for her.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. The Scout Master (not my hubby) wants to go to Mt. Peter. Has anyone ever been there? I am objecting because if I have to go on this trip I will be bored silly along with my hubby, son and daughter. We ski at Killington almost every other weekend so skiing a mole hill is not for me. However, even if we propose other mountains, the Scout Master may still insist on going to Mt. Peter since he is familiar with that little hill. Here is the information I found on Mt. Peter:
http://www.onthesnow.com/NY/280/

Just looked up Belleayre and found that they have a Scout day - Saturday, March 18. Maybe we can convince the Scout Master to try that mountain out. I've never been there but I think I probably would like it better than Mt. Peter.

I'm the "hubby"

1) It's gotta be one day, we're trying ti keep it simple. If it works well this year maybe next year we can expand.

2) I've been to Belleayre a few times, always thought it was almost as long a drive as Hunter even though it's one less exit on the Thruway. But if they're having a "Scout Day" that might be too good to pass up...

3) I too have never heard of Mt. Peter.

Me either, I'd be a little concerned that even the trail map on their website makes the place look flat... Who knows though it could be a really fun place to ski!

Spring is spring skiing, and start of little league. But the skiing is the focus in the spring, what with the B1BBQ's and the sunshine and the soft snow.

Are you saying you want to head over to K for opening weekend? We'll probably be there, or a subset of the family if they open the weekend of 11/12-13 (Ice_Mans last game, Ty will definitely be up)

Bellayre is a really nice place to ski... there's even a "lost" area that you can access..
Cool vibe...

It makes sense that Mt. Peter is lame - the scoutmaster that suggested it is kind of a dork - no offense to dorks, of course...
