So today, I;m helping out with a telecommunications install at an apartment building (I'm the project engineer) because the crew doing upgrade ran into some difficulties. After we work through are problems, one of the residents says that a bunch of rooms are still not working.

We explain to her, that we can take a look at it, but we're engineering, and we may need to get a tech over from service to actually fix the problem. She is undertanding.

The apartment building is a drug den. Not your casual safety meeting after a long day kinda place, but hard core stuff, Mostly heroin and crack. The first apartment we looked at was an authorization issue or bad a bad terminal. The 2nd apartment isn't working because there's only one working electrical outlet in the whole (1 room) apartment. So we attempt to swap the equipment from the two apartments (since 1 isn't gonna work unless an electrician comes out there). While one of the field engineers is on the phone trying to get the authorization refreshed, I go put the non-working terminal into the 2nd apartment.

As I'm doing this, the guy is telling me not to bother, he doesn't care that it doesn't work, because he's leaving anyway. I say to him..."well what happens when you come back?"

He tells me that he doesn't think he'll be coming back, because he doesn't like living there due to all the security cameras. I respond "Well I guess somebody likes them". He then proceeds to tell me that he has problems touching boys! And that's why he doesn't like the camera, because sometimes the boys touch him first, but the camera doesn't ever prove that. WTF I'm thinking.

He then tells me that he's leaving because he thinks the cops know he's there and since he's wanted, he needs to move often.

I get the heck out of there as fast as I can. I grab the field engineer and tell him, "WE ARE LEAVING NOW!!!"

As we get outside, I tell him the whole story. He really doesn't believe me...but I think it was more he had a contact high and didn't understand me.

As driving away...I'm pretty skeeved out. I decide that I need to report this and I call the local police department. They took my phone call very seriously and told me that they will send either a juvenile or narcotics detective over there, since they are well aware of the drug problems there. I give them a physical description of the scumbag and my phone number in case they want to contact me.

So AlpineZone friends...what would you do?

Probably the same thing you did. That whole situation would really freak me out, but then I've lived a pretty sheltered life.

Root you did the right thing.

The hard ball drug problem there is only going to get worse if left unreported or ignored. Kids can and ill get sucked into that shit if nothing is done

You know with certainty that Sexual Predators are sociopathic and need to be dealt with before they harm again , so again you acted wisely

You did the right thing. I've encountered some odd people in my time. But for someone to talk about something like that to a stranger has issues. Maybe he was tweaked out of his mind and lying? Maybe he really is a wanted pedo? Either way, seems to be a need for somebody to intervene.

I would have fire bombed the whole building. That way you take care of the pedo and the problem installation in one shot.

I'd report it because of the self professed pedophile. I wouldn't have bothered if it was just a drug den, but the predator needs to be dealt with.

i guess maybe in a perfect world i'd call the police, but, in reality, i'd probably think the dude was psycho/strung out/high and just f'ing with me (which is why i chose "other" in the poll).

without any proof, it's not like the police can do anything, and it's not like they'll monitor a junkie to see if they will touch boys some day.

Getting involved... wow.. It's a risk... I would've done it a bit more secretly.. like a letter...

Drug gangs are scary and seek vengeance... I'd watch my back depending on how this goes down... In fact I'd suggest Greg deletes this thread...

..seriously... Good luck..

I highly doubt that this 50+ guy was gang affiliated. In fact highly doubt that I'll ever be back in that town again.

I agree with Brian, nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure.

You should've called Wilson Goode.

Root, you did the right thing! +10

One of the toughest things that I have to do as part of my job every now and then is decide if I need to get the Department of Children and Family Services involved if I suspect cases of abuse/neglect. The descision to make that call (and the ramifications to the individual(s) potentially involved) are huge and they eat away at you. But in the end, when you're dealing with the potential health/welfare of minors you have to take an agressive stand and act in their best interest, since very often that minor will be unable/too embarassed to act for themselves.

Deep inside, you may feel a bit torn up about that call you made, but you did the right thing!

A. If there's that much of a drug problem, the cops already know about it.

B. He was reporting a potential predator. Pretty much considered low lifes across the board, I doubt the gangs would mind too much.

C. I would always be anonymous ... Rather then call... send a letter...

D. Gangs do not have scruples. You say something... there will be retaliation.

nuff said... Glad he's a hero and everyone knows.... good luck with that...
