As of tonight, ever trail is open at Cannon except for Tramline. I know it's wicked rocky and stumpy, but how much more snow do we need there before it opens? It opened last year after about 2 ft. dump on top of a scanty base.

I was there a few days last year when it was open and I didn't see a single person go down it. There's one section where there was simply no line. I'll take steep runs and rock drops, but with no landing it's just an exercise in rock climbing in ski boots..
we need a monumental dump to make this thing worthwhile imo

There is very few days that tramline has enough snow to be open.Even with the great snowfall Cannon has gotten this year there is not much snow in the woods. We had a huge melt right after x-mas that took virtually all the natural snow.I live at Mittersill and and as of last Sunday I could still see grass through the snow at my house.2 weekends ago there were no snowbanks at the Peabody side.None zero nada.None of the glades were open last weekend. It takes a lot of consistant snow fall to fill in Tramline even in a good year.If your headed there go ski Mittersill as the snowcover is finally good enough today.

Even when Tramline is open, I have found it marginal at best if not skied immediately following some fresh snow but long enough after the fresh snow that someone else can put a few tracks down to let you know where the rocks are. There are some massive rocks on that trail. Like Mr Butts said, it isn't dropping off a rock that will hurt but landing on rocks without enough snow cover sure will. Fun ripper when there is enough snow but it doesn't happen often. I think it has only opened 50% of the seasons since it was put on the map.

As it is a trail that is only open 50% of the seasons, would it warrant some work done on it to maybe improve that number to 80%. ie, removing some non-cliff rocks in landing zones? I imagine the purists would scoff at this notion.

It's been a solid 20 years since I've been to Cannon, so I don't have a mental image of how boney it is. Anyone have any good photos?

When the snow is there, it is a great trail. I think the second two links were both good snow days. That was just an insanely good two weeks at Cannon.

That 150" average is a real shame for that mountain. Guess you just gotta pick your spots when the gettin' is good

looks like a pretty killer trail when skiable.

Others may agree:

I was so tempted to poach it yesterday. Looked sick. Plenty of coverage for about 3 people to ski it. Still probably hit a bunch of rocks, but it would ski very, very well. I backed off since I was already tired and didn't want to make a fool of myself under the tram. I kind of wish I did now though... (I'm a sissy) If they get 6+ inches Saturday night a Sunday poach would be in IMO a top 10 run of the season. Don't do it though... I'll be back Tuesday and want first tracks.

FYI, they take Tram poaching pretty seriously at Cannon. I remember a few years ago riding the Tram and an Opp mentioned that they not only pulled the ticket of the skiers that had made tracks on Tramline but banned them from skiing Cannon for the rest of that year. Not sure on the truth to that statement but I see no reason to test its merits. Poaching liftlines is just bad karma.

Any trail but under the tram can be poached at Cannon. They don't take kindly to skiers on a closed Tramilne. There really is nowhere to go after poaching except into the arms of an official.Good news though. We had about 7 inches of snow this weekend and Mondays report says Tramline should open today. But as Steves pics show, there are some really boney areas in there that no amount of "Cannon" snowfall will completely cover, especially after being skied by 5 or more people.Lots of fun but expect a little damage at best.

isn't it a pretty long walk to return to an open lift from tramline or kinsman when the tram is closed?

So David, do you still want to try it for the bragging rights? It seems that it takes some serious logistics to be there on the right day at the right time. Have you skied under the lift at Wildcat yet?
