Okay here is the scoop... wife is away... and I can play! Just me, my Ipod, and my skis. I am thinking either Wildcat, Cannon, Waterville, The Bush... Although I don't want to stay overnight, I may just do that too!

Burke. Easy drive from Boston, not crowded, good vibe, and doable in a long day trip. Easier to get to than the 'bush.

Options I'm thinking of are Jay, Burke, or Mt. Ellen for Sunday after hiking K's backside Saturday. The thing that puts me off from hitting Jay is the reputation I've picked up that it's much better if you're with someone that knows the place, and that the non-woods stuff isn't that special. But I'm guessing it'll have the best snow. Mt. Ellen, I'm guessing will be decent but I'd rather hit all of SB when it's off the hook and non-holiday. Burke, again, I'd like to get when the getting's good.

Mt. Ellen at least I figure I've got a reliable guide lined up...

I'll be at the 'Cat tomorrow. Either Black or back at the 'Cat Sunday depending.

As one has said before. There are no lines to speak of at Mt. Ellen if the lifts are all working! Including holiday periods. I found no big lines MLK weekend at all. And the snow was excellent last weekend.

Cannon or Burke -- easy drive from Boston. There may be lift lines but I don't expect them to be ridiculous. Good luck getting a place for an overnighter. Up until yesterday, it was hard to get a room for a single night. Finally go one though. If you're heading to either Burke or Cannon, try the Comfort Inn in St. Johnsbury.

Bowing and Praying to the NRX God! knocking on some wood! But it is all due to the fact that the Lift Ops. Manager knew enough this year to do the exorcism at the beginning of the season. He was new last year!

What are the crowds at Jay like? Seems like it'd be a decent place for a holiday weekend. Not as far off the radar as Burke, but with a lot more snow in the last month.

How much snow has Burke gotten recently?

We got about 1 foot in three different mini storms over the past week and Jay got closer to two feet. The base is very solid even in the glades. All though some glades were roped off, I can assure you some were just fine. Throbulator had knee deep areas and the whole run was ankle deep, they had kept it closed for over a week and the snow built up nicely. We could sure use a dump, but it ain't so bad out there either. Could be much worse.

Jay is NOT a good place for a weekend or holiday. Montreal is about 2 hours away, so they just flock to the place. Jay is not a place for trail skiing at all unless there is fresh snow and no wind. The trails get scoured by the wind and, with the exception of Stateside, the trails either are frickin' steep and icy (River Quai) or slab across the fall line (Northway).

You go to Jay for midweek glade skiing. The glades are great.

River Quai has never skied icy in all the times I have skied it. The non-wind protected wind blown groomers are where things get icy quick. Goat and Northway are definitely the biggest offenders (which is crazy because those are the two biggest arteries on the mountain for moving people).

I think saying that Jay is not a good place for a weekend is at best an extreme over generalization. Even saying it is a bad place on a holiday is dubious. Jay is all about the snow. If a high profile snow storm has happened recently, crowds are going to be ridiculous.

Typical weekends are ski on until 10a-11a and then never more than a five minute wait tops except the tram. Holidays are busier but if there has been no new snow, nothing outrageous and certainly better than places closer to Metro. During some holiday weeks, Jay is a good option as it is the furthest place excepting Saddleback and Sugarloaf from metro areas and Quebec does not share many holidays with the US. If Jay has received a well publicized snow storm recently? Then definitely expect a lot of lines.

Completely agree Jay is not a great resort if you are not interested in trees. However, I have non-tree skiing friends that ski casually and LOVE the place.... perhaps due to its character and culture.

In my experience, weekends are busy on the trails and lifts at Jay relatively speaking. Is it Killington? No, but the vibe I got was, "gee, Jay is way up there so it must not be crowded," which is where I thought Mondeo was going with his comments. You and I ski single I imagine, so the singles line makes things move quickly, but the trails are crowded IMHO.

I think that if you ski trees all day you can get away from folks, but if you are skiing the trails on a Saturday in peak season, it is hard to say that the trails don't get crowded.

As to River Quai, glad to hear it has changed. The stretch from the top of Bonaventure down to the top of Metro Quad is what I was referring to, and I recall that being pretty interesting. The groomers, such as Northway, really get beat up.
