We went to Maine casue we can.

If I recall correctly you grew up skiing in Vermont and where you live could probably be at Sugarbush quicker than Sunday River. Just goes to show it's all about personal preference. Well, I actually hear you are the mayor at Sunday River, so you probably couldn't switch to Vermont if you wanted to.

I enjoyed my time in Maine with those areas being my primary haunts for the past three seasons. Where I live now, I'm still closer to SR than the Northern Greens, but because I'm an hour closer to VT and an hour further away from the ME areas, it's enough a gap that will lead me to spending more time in VT. I'll probably ski 8-9 times in VT, 2-3 times in ME, 10ish NH and 1-2 in MA/CT this season.

SR with just the one metro area and the great job they do will always rank near the top for skier visits. I do still agree with the others in that a King of Spring type area needs to have reasonable access from NYC to be successful at it though. There's only a small percentage of the skiing populus like us who want those late April - early May turns.

In my mind, northern New England
I think SR can legitimately make a run for King of Spring. Speaking of huge urban areas, the Boston metro area is populous enough to support Sunday River. Boston is equidistant (almost) from SR and Killington. Better customer service/interaction and a commitment to opening early/closing late tipped the scale in favor of SR last year. More aggresive marketing in the Boston area (e.g., free tickets at Sox games) and services aimed at folks here(e.g., a shuttle service from Boston to SR) can solidify the brand and attract more people to head up I-95.

I agree. Maine-rs are a different breed. That's probably why I decided to take my skiing there. Agree too on the "vibe" at the River. I can't explain it. You just have to experience it.

BobR is not the mayor. He's Mistaahmay-aahh! =)

I had a pass to both for two seasons and probably would've skied Loaf more than SR if it was closer.

This is the mayor http://www.myfoxboston.com/myfox/pa...ale=EN-US&layoutCode=VSTY&pageId=1.1.1&sflg=1

freekin hilarious. I just like Maine and Sunday River. I like the slopeside lodging. The vibe in General is great"my kids Love it." I have many friends there know and we talk often and not just ski season. wish I could get up there more. I feel at home there.

Freekin Ak and the Mayor. I owe him one.

Tom Golden is the Mayor of SR...well, Barker at least. He's been there for over 30 years. Bob is more like the SR Ambassador to the AZ and beyond
