My mom and dad took my brother, sister and I to Bromley for a week sometime in the late 1970's probably aroung 1978 when I was 8 years old. They had never skied before and I don't know what posessed them to take a family ski trip but I'm glad they did. Growing up we used to do a week long trip to Bromley or the Poconos every winter and my mom would take us on day trips a few weekends a winter. Us kids were hooked at the time but I'm the only one who skis now.

My mom really liked to ski and she would go skiing at local places on weekdays when we were in school but she no longer skis either. I didn't ski from about 1987 to 2005. I stopped when I turned 16 and my parents made me get a job so I was working every weekend. Around 1997 I started taking flying lessons and would see the local ski areas while flying around and I started thinking about it again but I really didn't have the time or funds until I got my airline job.

My wife asked me what I wanted to do durning our March vacation in 2006 and I said I would like to go to Bromley for a few days and ski. We went and I was hooked again. The wife took up snowboarding but since I'm off a lot of weekdays I get out a lot more.

A good friend: we met while sailing in our home country in the tropics where we raced against each other. We were both competitive and part of the basis of our friendship was healthy competition. We both got accepted to school in Boston and, when we weren't studying, spent time on the water. When the river froze, he decided to get into skiing. I had no money then so my winter sport was ice skating on the Frog Pond for $3. He would always talk about skiing and how great it was. A year later, I had some cash, so I went to Sunapee to take a lesson. Got hooked. He took me skiing the next week and almost got me killed going down a blue trail. Bastard actually left me behind! After that incident, I spent every week on the slopes trying to get better so I can beat him. Got my revenge last Thanksgiving at Sunday River. Smoked him!

My father took up skiing at Dartmouth College back in the 1940's while serving ROTC during WWII. They skied on the Golf Course and Oak Hill. He then gave it up even going as far as to spend several years in the tropics in Indonesia working for Standard Oil. On a family Christmas trip to Boulder Colorado another family member convienced him to go again. My brother and I being at a good starting age spent our 1st day on skis at Hidden Valley at Estes Park. My father remained an avid skier up to the winter he passed away. My mother was from Georgia and while she gave it a try she could never handle the cold and didn't like to go fast. My brother skied till his late twenties but moved down south and gave it up. I of course continue to ski to the tune of 50+ days a year.

My mom and dad. They both skied before they had kids, but once my sisters and I came along I guess they didn't have the time or money and didn't go again until I was in the 4th grade when our town's weekly trips to Sundown started. They got out and skied a few times over the years, but I mostly skied with friends on the ski trips. My dad still gets out from time to time now that I'm back into it.

My Dad. He was a weekend instructor at Sugarloaf. I rode around in a backpack until I could walk then I got on skis around 2-3. I should really be a better skier ...

for me it was my mother...her mother and father started in the 1930s, my mother started at 6, I started at 3, my daughter started at 18months...my mother's mother skied until she was 93. I had a great time last winter skiing with my mother and daughter (31/2 last winter) and can't wait to get her back out this winter.

Like in your family it has been passed down in mine too. My dad was a ski instructor at Hunter. We spent every weekend and holiday there in the winter. I started at 6. All 3 of my kids ski very well.

My dad. I would stand on his skis as we went down the hill at the golf course.

I guess all the kids I grew up with kept me into skiing. Maybe I should say my Mom, when I was 5 she put me and my older brothers in an afterschool skiing program. All the Mom's in the neighborhood did this and shared drop-off/pick-up of about 10 of us to the slopes (1 mile away). They would come back at 6 and we were expected to be at the edge of the parking lot so they could get us home for the dinner that was left cooking at home. I really have no recollection of ever skiing with adults, it was really just a bunch of 5-7 year olds.

My mom and dad started me when I was 4. My dad has not skied in a few years but my Mom is 70 and is still out there all day with us. She has 9 grandkids and regularly skiis with the 7 oldest. The 2 youngest at 3 and 4 are going to start this year. I am the most addicted of my Mom's 4 kids, but we all like to get out there and pound the mountain.

I have had the Jones since I started.

Me, no one in my family skis. But at a very young age I knew that was what I wanted to do. So when I was old enough my parents signed me up with the Massachusetts Ski Club and the rest is history!

I started skiing on a long weekend to Mt. Snow with friends I had met at Club Med in Turkoise. I always tell everyone that I failed my first lesson and the instructor told me and a friend that we would not be able to get on a lift. When we told our friends that, they thought it was funny so they decided to take us to the top of the mountain and take us down a long green trail (Long John?). I fell many times on the way down but each time I was laughing and having a good time. I decided I like to ski after all and I took more lessons during that long weekend. Have been skiing ever since although I only started skiing very regularly after SkiDork and I purchased a place at Killington in 1999. Before getting married, I had a half share in a skihouse at Killington for a few years. Previous to that, I would do a few ski trips a year - some of them for a week to Western resorts as well as Eastern resorts.

My dad, though he was not a skier.

From the moment I could walk, my parents couldn't keep me inside when there was snow on the ground. In second grade my father put me in an after school program at Ward Hill figuring I'd like it. No one, but a cousin of mine had skied before.

Today, I'm the only regular skier in the family, but since that time EVERY member of my immediate family has at least been out a few times. My parents got into the sport after me and it was their primary activity for 20 years. They bought a small place in VT where all my aunts, uncles, cousins etc would come visit and try the sport.

My father's decision has probably had a greater impact on my life's direction than any other choice he or I have made. It determined where I went to High School, College, the profession I chose for a dozen years or so. I'm certain skiing will be part of the fabric of many of my life's decisions that I have yet to make as well.

100% self motivated, self taught. Didn't start skiing until college, because my parents didn't ski, and told me it was too expensive.

Of the very, very few complaints I have about my childhood, it's that my parents only really made available the 'usual' recreations (i.e. baseball, basketball) i.e., all the activities at which I'm terrible. I had no guidance when those individual activities I learned that I really loved, cycling and skiing, became more available to me. No one in my family shares any of my hobbies, with the exception of woodcutting, lol.
