OK - another off-season thread to keep your head in the game:

I grew up racing, so most of my skiing idols were racers, and we're talking a while ago. At the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, Jean-Claude Killy won gold in all 3 disciplines, and he was THE MAN. He was on TV 24/7, even here in the States, and he was a god. I was 8 years old and all us little racers wanted to be just like him until we found out he skied on 225 cm Head 360s which weighed about 10 lbs apiece!

In the '70s, I used to root for the crazy Canadian downhill squad (Ken Read, Steve Podborski, etc), who would either win or crash spectacularly every week. Every racer in my high school wanted to be Franz Klammer after his insanely out of control downhill win in 1976.

After, I was really into the Mahre Bros in the '80s, and the American womens' team was really good back then, too (Tamara McKinney, etc).

In the '90s-'00s, Hermann Maier is just too much. Coming back from the motorcycle injury to win the World Cup is nothing short of amazing. But, I'm really glad the American racers did well during that time, too (Picabo, Tommy Moe, etc). Nowadays, of course, I watch Bode, but he disappointed big-time in Torino.

Someday I want to go to Europe and watch an FIS downhill, ring a cowbell and get hammered on Warsteiner for a week. I'd do just about anything to someday see the Hahnenkamm downhill in person.

Who were/are your winter sports idols?

Jeremy Jones (while he was nowhere near the first hes the one I give credit to for taking it to the next level - the father of backcountry riding to me would be Tom Burt) for pioneering the backcountry snowboarding revolution. His scenes in TGR's Further from 2000 are just plain incredible. Hes only stepped it up even more since then.

I'm a big Nobis fan. Very few can rip it up like he can. Also Micah Black. Does some amazing things for a real tall guy. Meet him every year at the TGR party in NYC.

My snowboard idol is Todd Richards. He was one of the first big snowboarders. He has been snowboarding all his life and has really help spread the sport. Check out his biography, Park, Pipes and Powder. I own it and it is very amusing.

Honest answer: all those great skiers that I saw on my home mountain making great turns with ease. I watched them and even followed their tracks.

Now some names: I like Glen Plake. Met him in January '04 and got his autograph. Also met Doug Coombs and got his autograph...now worth lots I imagine! ("Vermonters know how to ski!")

Coombs was the backcountry man...however I didn't know much of him in my formidable early years.....so...thats why I picked Plake...

Damn Bob beat me to the punch. But I guess we can both idolize Tree_skier.

Growing up it might have been Tommy Moe. I can remember trying to do "Tommy Moe Airs" (just a downhill flight position) off of big rolls.

Once I rced against some kid named Bode in JI/IIs Super G at Cannon. He was a forefunner and smoked even the fastest skiers that were 4 or more years old than him.

Now i would have to say it it Dave P-Q-Nes from RSN at SR. That guy gets to ski everyday, make videos, and he rocks on his teles:wink:
