Well..my gf booked a trip to Florida for 4/4 - 4/8 so I'm going to miss 1 prime weekend of spring skiing...have Sunapee tommorrow, Okemo on the 25th and the big K on april 1, but am looking to get in a few more after that as well.

So...who will still be open in april and where should we go?
I'm thinking Okemo (?), Bretton woods, Killington, Sunday River, possibly Sugarloaf..

Where will my 'best bets' be as april goes along?

The Bush (Lincoln Peak) will be open until 4/22, and then, weather permitting, for the last weekend in April. Mt. Ellen (much to my chagrin and bitter disgust) will be closing after 4/1.

Sugarbush is always a best bet for awesome spring skiing. Mt. Ellen is the prime spot, but you should find some nice corn bumps on Steins.

Closing Ellen early is stupid IMHO. Making the same mistake that LBO did....Ellen, though it is away from "the village" has a higher elevation, a better lift configuration for early and late season skiing (that is why they designed the place the way they did), and great terrain that is up high. Worst comes to worst, you have the Summit Quad, Upper FIS, Black Diamond, Upper Exterminator, [Devil's] Elbow, and Rim Run to choose from. A nice trail pod. LP on the other hand only offers Ripcord, Upper Organgrinder, Upper Jester, and maybe Paradise and it is a pain in the a$$ to download.

I think the late season skiing will be from Super Bravo on Steins, etc.

But you're right... it's just all-around stupid. I have the feeling they'll figure that out after it DOESN'T work well!

Hunter should definitely be open into at least the beginning of April, probably a good deal later than that if the predicted cooler temps come on the 20th. They don't usually close lifts until the snow is completely gone.

I remember a couple years back...being up there in 60 degree temps, and it being the last day for Hunter West, Way Out was about five feet wide for a good section of it.

Sno Mountain is planning on being open into April, and from what a friend has said, they've got plenty of snow to last longer than that.

Blue is still making snow, but I would guess they will close the first week of April.

I've been called "Stupid" before, but LP it is! And I like skiing late as much as anyone!

Win, what's the plan on the late season, IE what can you foresee being open for lifts and trails. In the past we had the Summit Quad - FIS and Rim Run at North. So what's in store for South? Was this change made due to the renewed focus on Lincoln with the new base area? Thanks

we blew extra snow on Stein's, Snowball. Spring fling and Coffee Run. We will keep Bravo and Heaven's Gate going as long as possible and then switch to Valley House when necessary.

Yes, we think the new Lincoln Peak base area with the BBQ area outside Castlerock Pub and opening the doors to Timbers and Castlerock Pub will create a great Spring Venue.

Stein's is a great late season option. Hopefully it can survive late into the srping despite being at a significantly lower elevation than FIS. I noticed Stein's was groomed Thursday night. Was that an effort to further preserve the base?

Sugarloaf is always a good bet for late season skiing and the mountain usually hit's it's stride in early April. Even last Easter weekend the mountain still had substantial snowcover even with a thaw a few days beforehand:

Easter sunday was very cold and even had 1/2" of new snow falling during the day.

I agree Sugarloaf will try to stay open, as well as Sunday River. It may be a little tough, but I think at least those two will make it to at least mid April maybe a little further, we'll see.....

This may not be the year, but a few years ago Sunday River did a May 1 gathering for season pass holders bar-b-que with having enough snow for some people to do a few runs. Abeit a "few", but some runs none the less. I even did three runs, but after seeing a young kid take a nasty fall, I called it. That was enough for me. It was quite fun watching the brave souls skiing in all kinds of different outfits, shorts, no shirts, bikini tops, my husbands favorite was girls in tee shirts and colorful bras who pull their tee shirts behind their necks. ;) Silly man!

Whiteface has been open till the middle of April the last two years. If they made it that far last year (nowhere near the consisten cold temps of this year) we should make it there no problem if you ask me. Sure itll be pretty thin in spots, but its still fun.

I thought Sunday River is traditionally free for everyone on May 1? I don't think they try to stay open this late anymore, but I've skied Sugarloaf as late as May 15th. That was pre ASC days.

I can see Killington being outlasted this year, not due to economics but actual snow for once - there really is not a huge base on Skye Peak this year... I can see Sugarbush perhaps doing it... although with the move from Ellen to Lincoln, who knows.

Yes. Grooming Stein's not only made for some sweet skiing and riding these past few days, but it set it up well for the Spring. The snow is really deep there and spread out over the entire trail. It will bump up beautifully as it warms up.

Stein's elevation should not be a problem for late spring skiing....Don't forget how long they kept superstar open back in the day.

True, except that Killington used to blow upwards of 15 feet of snow on Superstar (no joke). I can personally guarantee that there is not 170"+ of snow on Stein's! Although, I don't think Win really wants to be open through the end of May anyway like K-Mart used to!

Ah yeah, the days of skiing above the Superstar lift!!!
