Why People Don't Ski?

So, I started skiing at age 49. Just prior to my 50th birthday. I had people at work say they thought it was stupid to try to start skiing at my age. I think there are many reasons. If you don't live near skiing it's not likely you'll start. I lived in the deep south for 15 years and never even considered starting to ski. Folks don't like the winter and they don't like the cold. Skiing is perceived as cold, and certainly can be cold. We moved to NE and I just flat thought I was too old to learn to ski and that I'd break my ass. And frankly, after day 1 I would've gladly never skied again. The boots are a pain in the rear, carrying skis is a pain, everything is completely awkward... After we moved here my wife kept trying to talk me into trying skiing. Gunstock has a screaming deal on a 3-day package and I agreed I'd give it the old college effort. After day 1 I was ready to never come back, after day 2 she was ready to never come back, after day 3 we were driving to NH every weekend. If you don't grow up near skiing, and if your parents don't get you into skiing you're not likely to start. There's a heck of a lot of folks out there who would just never even consider skiing. The perception is high risk, expensive, and cold.

We have a friend that uses the too high risk answer and that she is not coordinated enough. I think you are right about not skiing if not taught young. Only possibility is that you have adult friends at work that ski and talk you into it or like my wife's case the husband talked her into it.

I took my Sister, a never ever, to Santa Fe. She took a lesson, but never made it off the bunny hill. Worse yet, she crashed into a snow fence and got a small gash on her cheek. We also went to Rockefeller Center to ice skate once. I literally had to hold her up. Mailman's kid?

She wants to eventually move from NYC to Santa Fe. She would surely enjoy Winters there more if she could catch the ski bug. Either way, I'll have family living in NM, and CO.:D

I have a friend that comes up and stays with me for a week in Stowe and still can't get her to try skiing. She keeps saying that she wants to try it, but always backs out at the last minute. Has nothing to do with the cold, since she hikes pretty much everyday she is up there. Thinking it more has to do with the fear of hurting herself. Hopefully this year she will give it a try.
