We are experiencing wicked high sustained winds with gusts over 60 mph . There are many power outages in the region-- so far so good here .

Our snow pack once 2 ft deep in my yard is all but gone > and our regional hill is shut down for a second day

My local hill, Campgaw is open today. I guess they prepared well, they were closed on the 2 coldest days last week, their website said "closed for snowmaking". So apparently they blew a lot of snow last week and it was enough. Hidden Valley in Jersey is closed today and Mountain Creek is open. The wind is just starting to pick up here too.

Why? evaporation?

If it's warm, but calm, the snow actually cools the air close to it. If it's warm and windy, the wind effectively blows this shallow cool layer away.

Stratton: Due to high winds in excess of 50 mph the upper mountain is closed. We have skiing and riding from the main base area. Colder temperatures return Wednesday night and snowmaking will resume!

Stowe: 4 runner and gondi closed

Jay: Due to high winds the Tram, Flyer and Bonaventure Quad are on delay. The Jet Triple and all lower mountain lifts are running.

[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif][SIZE=-1]Wildcat will be skiing and riding on the lower mountain trails only, 2 lifts, including the Bobcat and Snowcat triple lifts. Efforts to maintain base coverage have limited grooming and terrain available.

RIP snowpack (this was all yellow in SNE and NNE last week) and Jay was RED

Big Red dot in Maine

Is that big red dot in Maine on top of Sunday River?

I think the two red dots in Maine along the NH border are Sugarloaf (to the north) and Sunday River.

At least, I hope so. I'm planning a week at the River, 1st week of Feb. This weather is OK for washing cars but that's not what winter is about!
