Well first let me start off by saying don't get scared as you are driving towards the mountain and don't see any snow along the road. There is snow at the mountain. I drove up from Gorham and there was a little snow the whole way up Rte. 16. However on the way home there was no snow by the time I got to Dana Place on Rte 16 in Jackson.
Well The day was amazing. I can say it was probably in my top 5 days ever. My best opening day and my best ski day in October (considering my others required downloading from T2 at Sunday River).
The lifts starting turning at 9:50. I was about the 10th one on the TomCat Triple lift. Headed down Middle lynx and to my surprise there was about 2-3 feet of powder along the side of the groomed track. I took a nice header in the powder after launching a 3-5 foot drop right under the lift. After two runs on Lynx they open lower Tom Cat and Polecat. They were fun, but mostly groomed.
After 5 runs total, I was sick of the same three trails. Don't get me wrong, they were great, especially for October, but I had heard there were goods to be had above the Tomcat Triple. I went to my car and get my skins. I climbed to the summit in a little over 30 minutes. Boy skinning made me realize how out of shape I am. I rested at the top and had my lunch. I skied down Upper and Middle Wildcat. They were a little wind blown, but great. As I got the to bottom of Middle Wildcat a bunch of skiers and riders were entering from the Tomcat Triple. They had just dropped the rope. Anyways I continued down Cheetah and had probably the third or fourth tracks on it. The snow was a little heavy and crusty, but come on its October.
I took a quick break and then headed up to take a few more runs on the skiers left of the mountain. As I was headed to the left. I saw a few other tele'ers about to drop into StarrLine and since I had someone to go with I went too. I couldn't believe the snow, so soft and gentle at the start of the trail and we came to the rocky steep section. Unbelivable we could drop the rocks and land on the next like they were stairs and really hit rocks. I think i hit one rock the whole day and it was on that trail. I took a few tumbles, but landing was nice and soft. Well i blew out a buckle on my boot and my foot bed was rolling up under my foot so I had to call it a day, plus i heard from a friend (who decidedhe needed to work today instaed of ski, boy did he make the wrong descision) that K was opening and I needed to save some legs for tomorrow.
I ended up fixing the buckel on my boot and I'm headed to bed so i ski for my second straight day in October.
