I can't recall having heard this before ...

http://www.skiwildcat.com/whats-happening.html?id=5333

For the next two days, Wednesday, January 23 & Thursday, January 24, the forecast for Wildcat Mountain is calling for bitter cold temperatures and wind chill warnings that will create unsafe conditions for our guests and employees. Because of this, Wildcat Mountain will be closed Wednesday and Thursday and plans to reopen Friday, January 25. At this time, at its lower elevations, Attitash Ski Resortis scheduled to operate weather/conditions permitting, but please check their snow report for the most up-to-date information.

For Wednesday, the forecast is calling for ambient temps in negative double digits and -48 wind chill daytime.

I believe Wildcat did that earlier this year too. Probably saves some cash with minimal fallout. Weekdays are not busy even with nice weather, probably would have been a ghost town out there today.

+1 I'd guess this was more of the reason than the safety of their guests. I'd believe it more if they closed on a Saturday.

This isnt unprecedented. I had probably 5-10 days at Whiteface where they would close the gondi. After talking to the patrollers they mentioned that it mainly has to do with evac situations. Given the cold temps and windchill factors if something were to happen it would result in certain frostbite and possible death if it takes long enough to get them off.

I skied at Wildcat once when it was not quite this cold, but it was negative teens with a -30 wind chill. There was me and 2 other people skiing on the mid mountain lift only. There was a reporter that tried to interview me at the bottom of the lift but I'm not sure she could understand what I was saying through the double balaclava. 8)

The cold is not really an issue if you dress properly and leave no skin exposed, the only issue is the snow turns to styrofoam and skis kinda weird. I think they're saving money under the guise of public safety.

Only 3 lifts at Sugarloaf are running and 6 at Sunday River today (1/24). This is partly due to the wind, though. Yesterday most of the normal lifts were running at those ski areas in spite of similar temperatures.

This does happen at Whiteface from time to time.

It's not as cold as further north, but I'll be out in my race suit at Wachusett tonight. Boot heaters set on high!

They cancelled my race league tonight.
I skied all day yesterday at Bromley and it was fine. I do not own boot heaters or use the cjemical ones.
