Today I was out at the pool vacuuming it enjoying the beautiful sun. I look towards the edge of my yard and I see what looked like a small German Shepard walking towards my gate at the pool. I then realized it was a fox that looked sick. It’s tail was flat and not puffy. I closed the gate to keep it out and hoping it would pass. It was not scared by me. It sat on my ramp to my shed and then went through some trees to my uncle’s yard.
At this point I exited the pool area and walked next door to see the fox. My uncle is in the garden and I alert him that there is a mangy looking fox about 50 feet from him near the wood pile. He approaches the fox with his garden hoe. The fox then starts to roll in the dirt sort of like a dog would do. It was like he did not even see us. My uncle told me to call the police, which I did.
At this point the fox was walking to my uncle’s neighbor's yard with small kids. The kids went inside and the other adults like me were out taking pictures of it. My uncle said it was rabid due to the way it was acting. He would know as he worked with wildlife before.
A police officer showed up and followed the fox in the yard until it crossed the street and started to walk down the sidewalk. It took a crap on the sidewalk in front of the officer! The fox went into the woods with the officer following.
Before I knew it the wildlife patrol showed up at my house and so did another officer. They all went into the woods. I was expecting to here the gun go off, but it got away. This fox was reported two times already and this is the first time the police / wildlife officers actually saw it.
This is not the first time I had seen a fox in my yard. Normally once I open the door they shoot off into the woods. Here are some pictures from today. I zoomed in the best I could. I am not as brave as my uncle! This is my uncle approaching the fox:
The fox sitting in my uncle's garden. My uncle was not very happy as he just planted there!:
The police car in my driveway. You can see my lawn that was planted last year and the spot I seeded three weeks ago where a tree stood last October. I guess quality grass seed makes a difference.:
