I just saw on the news that Brian Fairbanks, owner of jiminy Peak, wants to put a 320 foot wind turbine on top of the mountain to power their snowmaking operation. There are some things I don’t like about Jiminy, but I really admire how innovative Fairbanks is.

Yeah I saw that earlier today in the AZ News Forum:

Sweet!

This is a fantastic idea!!! What better way for a ski area to reel in costs, reduce pollution, and promote alternative energy solutions. Anyone who fights something like this seriously needs some sense knocked into them.

What a great idea! Haven't been to Jiminy in about 8 years but it's always seemed pretty windy up top.

Some of the more notoriously windy mountains should consider this. Whiteface, Jay, Cannon for instance. That is just great.

Just heard from Jiminy...

After posting here last night, I sent a short sweet e-mail to Jiminy praising their efforts. I've already received 2 replies from the mountain that were quite appreciative of the support. I'm sure there's going to be some NIMBY out there that will complain about the eyesore, so if the progressives among us really want to see this happen, share the love! Let your support be heard!!!

They're so efficient now a days you don't need high winds, just relatively consistant winds (which I realize can mean the same thing on the top of a mountain).

Actually, high winds puts unnecessary stress on them... I'm sure the bearings in those aren't cheap. They actually have mechanisms to change the pitch of the blades to keep them from spinning too fast. The videos you see of the wind farms in the southwest makes it look like the spin slow, but they're so massive the tips can exceed the speed of sound so they have the lessen the pitch or the turbulence will eat away the blades.

Best part is, they'll be able to sell some power (especially in teh summer) back to teh grid. If a NIMBY gets his feathers all ruffled, tell him the windmill is reducing his electricity costs.

Then beat him soundly about the head and face.
