Couldn't get anyone of my usual crew to go so I went alone. Didn't want to miss this "weather window." Arrived at about 8:20 AM (left my house at 5:30AM) to find the first two terraces pretty much filled with cars. Temp was already about 35 degrees and skies were sunny and bright. Had to wait about 5 minutes for the main quad to open. While waiting I struck up a conversation with a guy who turned out to be an extremely good skier and we ended up skiing every run together for the day, literally until "last chair." We did a couple of fast warm-up runs on "Whirlwind" (under the quad chair). Then we toured the mountain. "The Wall" was icy between piles of snow, so we only did it once. "Upper and Lower Wolverine" were beautifylly groomed and very fast, so we did a couple of runs there. "Upper wheelchair" was bumped up, but very edgeable so that was fun. We then headed for "G lift." Excellent coverage on all three blacks off the top. The center trail, "Wing'n It" was bumped up from the top to about 2/3rds of the way down. What was great, was that there was NO ice, and lots of good snow on the bumps. During the course of the day we made at least 8 to 10 runs down that trail. My new acquaintance was incredibly smooth through the bumps so I just kept following his line and moves, and enjoyed myself immensely! We also did the the two side trails, but liked the bumps so much we kept going back. On the other side of the mountain we also did "Wedel" which had larger, more irregular bumps, but again with good coverage so that was fun too. A short break for lunch sitting outside on the picnic benches soaking up the sun was beautiful! About 1:30 things got a bit sticky down near the base. Not too bad actually, considering that the temps must have been in the upper 40's or lower 50's and it was very sunny. The solution to that on most trails was to try to ski the shade. I did teach my new friend a trick he liked. When a lift runs along a trail, and the sun is just right, the chair shadows are a lot of fun to use as "slalom" markers. You can ski the "downhill" shadows pretty easily. The "uphill" shadows are a real rip because they are coming at you much faster and require some really intense carving. Overall, we probably got in at least 25 runs and had a really great day. BTW, today and tomorrow they are running a $30 lift ticket promotion, so it only cost me just a little more then a $1 a run!
