Two of us are planning a three month "road trip" for a combination of backcountry and lift assisted skiing from Colo. North to BC next year. We have about $30,000 to spare for a used RV of some sort. What should we get?

If you can do without the bathroom, you can mount a pretty sweet camper top on top of a pickup.

Have no clue what a RV rental goes for. Also if the RV market is anything like the boat market now (i.e. repossesion and fire sales) that might be worth looking into also.

Cool adventure

Save the other 27K for repairs and gas.

Dude this sounds like a real good time!

Do either of you have a truck-if so get a fifth wheel so you don't have to drive a camper all over the mountains when staying for a while. A pick-up truck is probably more reliable and easier to fix than a camper. Also there are places you can park for free if you want to do it ghetto style ie Taos, A-basin, Summit county Wal-Mart or any Wal-Mart.

Are you going to chase storms all winter? If so you are forfilling the next level of my lifelong dream and I'm so jealous for you.

Not sure what rentals cost, but I would look into that first. Piece of mind if something major breaks and probably a lot less than even a used purchase cost if only being used for one occasion. Don't forget not just purchase price but tax, registration, inspection, plates, etc.

I suppose you need them to be able to this:

Wish I had a spare 60k kicking around to get one ...

I've seen a few around here in CT. I'm not sure to what extent they've been modified though. I think there are some companies that will just do a basic 4wd conversion...nothing too crazy like built axles, t-case and lockers.
