Kind of ironic, isn't it, that the companies are commercializing the anti-commercialization of Valentine's Day?

Sometimes I think that Al Capone had the right idea.

i actually conducted an anti-valentine's day party two years ago (btw, i had a girl friend for this event and still have the same one today, we do not recognize whatever is so special about this day to other people). the concept of the anti-valentine's day involved lots of friends gathering together to watch depressing movies (requiem for a dream for example) and playing RISK (cause war and the quest for global domination is about as far removed from love as possible!). a brief bar crawl concluded the evening. the word 'love' was prohibited as well as any body even mentioning the fact it was valentine's day or complaining that they were single. it was great.

the commercialization of this idea surely seems inevitable. today is perhaps the most despised day of the year for so many people. either people hate it because they are single or they hate it because their significant other didn't do something 'perfect' enough, um yea. no love lost here, you could say ;)

I dislike it because all the good restaurants are packed, and you feel like you oought to at least go do something, somewhere, for some reason.

We had our Valentine dinner last night. Restaurants were empty.

It does sound rather ironic to protest one holiday by creating a new one. Sounds like a great time. Did you ban the color red?

ah, but it wasn't another holiday, it was just a party :) i can't remember if we banned red or not, i suspect it was implied  ctenidae makes the central point i dislike about the whole valentine's day thing and that is obligation, and implied "ought". if you really care about someone, you are doing something special for them regardless of the day, not because of the day. gifts are best given for no reason what so ever. same with dinner, same with flowers, etc.

LMAO ... great idea! "Requiem for a Dream" is one of my top "pet peeve" movies, though. I just can't stand Jared Lito's (sp?) fake NY accent! That end scene with Jennifer Connoly though ...

On topic, I find myself resenting Valentines Day more and more each year. The Pressure to find the perfect gift and spend lots of money on it is stressful.

Went to dinner in the North End last night- walked right in with no reservation. Most of the places looked pretty empty, except for Mike's Pastry, which had a line out the door. The Modern's closed, for some reason- windows all boarded up adn everything. So, no good desert :(

A buddy of mine holds the same view, and told his girlfriend he didn't believe in valentines day. In return, she told him he couldn't have even one bite of V-day candy (candy hearts, chocolate, etc.) So my boy and I put a good dent in the Necco candy hearts she had on the coffee table the other night. :)

The wife and I didn't do anything special. I brought home some tulips (roses were sold out, but she gets roses 5-6 times per year anyway), we sat down to a nice quiet dinner with the little one, then watched some Good Eats and Olympic coverage.

It was a nice quiet evening: No rushing to get ready, get the kid to the sitter, and then sit in a cramped restaurant and pay twice as much for the V-day special as you would have for the same meal the night before (or after). Hallmark Holidays have gotten way out of hand.
