Yes a year round ski area is under construction in North Carolina and it will offer 900 verts and even a 750 foot long indoor mogul run. Ski purists on here don't care about Xanadu in North Jersey..but this is going to be awesome....Road Trip anyone??? Check out the link

There is a hill, a road, and a river at the address on the website, so that part's legit, anyway.
900 ft indoors would be pretty cool in July.

Do you think this is a huge energy consumption issue???? Yes we would all want to ski year round but consider how much energy will be consumed by this project...........

i'll sell you a pass now - $1500 for a lifetime pass - cash only.

i also represent mr jonathan akabor, the former finance minister for the city of abuja in nigeria, who was recently forced from his position. mr akabor has a large amount of US funds ($25MM) that he needs help with.......

Probably a tremendous amount, that will vary greatly depending on ambient conditions and the amount and effectiveness of their insulation.

But you got to figure... suppose it's more energy than a fully operating Killington at peak snow making?

Wait... 36% is only 20 degrees. Doesn't seem to impress me too much.

Although, I suppose for indoors, it's not bad. But that's only a mid-grade intermediate slope by New England standards.

I'll go anyway to check it out.

20 degrees is a black diamond at most ski areas in the east..

In my opinion..being able to ski year round within a days drive is worth the extra energy consumption..

In the east, yes. By Northern New England standards... not so much. Maybe a low-level diamond.

But for North Carolina inside, darn right they'll call it black diamond. Maybe even double!

What you have to realize is that, the degree of difficulty of a trail is generally determined by its steepest 300 linear feet (that tends to be the industry standard method). I'm assuming that's what the 36% represents. If that's the average pitch of the entire trail, then maybe (depending on the steepest 300') it should be a black diamond. But if that references the steepest 300 feet, then that is not very diamond-worthy.

For what it's worth, The Cliffs at Sugarbush has a pitch of 50%, or 26.6 degrees on the headwall for 300 linear feet. It flattens out a bit after that, and probably has an average pitch closer to 35 or 40%. FIS's steepest 300' is about 32 degrees, or about 62%. It's average pitch is more like 29 degrees/55%.

It would be interesting to find out what they really mean by a "36% slope."

Isn't a 36% slope....equivelent to a 1,000 foot long trail with a 360 vertical foot drop???? Anyway I'll be at the place in NC when it opens in a few years and I'll post a photo report..I hope they don't have anything too tough like Corbets Couloir..lol

Yes, assuming that the pitch is exactly the same for the entire trail.

Yeah, watch out for those indoor couloirs!

Ditto. I was looking at it with one eyebrow raised and was thinking the condos come first followed by the ski trails next year,...ok...maybe the year after.....or the year after that or .....
