You Know Its The Beginning of a Great Ski Season When

Its Dec 20th and natural snow ski trails in the Catskills like Belleayre's Cathedral Brook and Utsayantha are opened along with top to bottom wrap around intermediate man made snow trails Roaring Brook and Deer Run. WOW what a great start.

Keep the Karma going

When Blue mountain has Paradise open today and the possibility of 100% for the holidays.

When ice patches in the east are as rare as out west.

When Jay peak has more snowfall to date than Jackson Hole

When your fat skis are used more than your carving skis.

When there's five winter storms before the first day of winter.

Oh it is good right now but lets not get ahead of ourselves. The one thing the last few years have taught me is is don't count your cards before they are fully dealt.

...when there is a lift delay - not because of wind - but because they need to dig out the snow to clear the bull-wheel for one of the lifts.

This actually happened March 2001 at Mad River Glen.

When you hike for turns on Camels Hump in Vermont, and treeline starts WAAY lower than you thought (like about 3600'!). You make it to the summit, and start skiing, and you are skiing big, sizeable snowfields, interspersed with dwarfed trees - and then you realize that the dwarfed trees are the tops of 20 ft tall spruces!

This happened to my buddy Chris & me after the 36" storm in late March 2001.

Here's to hoping both happen again!

That happened to the Spillway chair when it finally stopped snowing on April 18th, 2007 when Sugarloaf got 107" of snow in one week. The snowcat digging out the Spillway chair got stuck, by the way:-o
