I sometimes ski with my poles out to the side..for extra space..Jersey....although I met Hardline and Root and neither one of them has a strong NJ accent,.,.

i meant poles pointed straight up the hill in the direction of on-coming skiers. i will have to try the poles fully extended outward......on great eastern..........skiing slow..........and really drunk.

To me, tracked out = no untracked lines. I usually add a disclaimer of rough approximation such as somewhat, mostly, or completely tracked out to indicate if I could find *any* untracked lines. And when I refer to an "untracked line", that to me is any series of turns made through powder that has no previous tracks, even if it is only a one yard wide wiggle. I tend to call "tracked out" skiing sloppy seconds, which is tracked out powder and still really fun.

I agree with Steve's definition. I also have many, many fewer powder days than him, so I'm happy with tracked-out powder conditions. But as far as what I consider "untracked," to me it is what Steve described above.

Looks good to me!

Of course it looks good, but that wasn't the question.

If we're talking about powder, then we are talking about some kind of flotation. No more flotation to be had = tracked out. Simple. Doesn't mean what's left isn't still soft, or isn't any good.

Tracked out has to go by trail and tree run. There's always one more spot out in the hinterlands somewhere.

The east has taught me to be a looker turner. Look for snow, and turn there.

If I find sweet untracked, I almost always make a point for a return trip ASAP..and sometimes if it's way out there with a long traverse or hike...threes a charm to make sure there isn't remaining untracked.

Us east coasters are scavengers for powder..every nook and cranny of obvious untracked is skied sometimes in 30 minutes if there's alot of lift capacity..or a few hours on a less crowded day..Then there's sidecountry and backcountry..

Sidecountry is the best..sometimes you can hike 300 vert for 600 vert of fresh..above or to the side of a resort boundary because you can traverse much farther over..the older I get, the less I mind hiking for turns. In college, hiking up Nosedive for early and late season turns was so grueling..now I would just take a longer mellower route..better to hike 3 miles at a 10 degree pitch than 1.5 miles at a 20 degree pitch..at least for my low speed quads..

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm on the skiers right edge of a 6 foot lane of untracked in that photo. IE, there's tracks, but I'm still in untracked. And yes, there's more to be had there.

thats why i like going from the quad along the ridge. yes im lazy

Aaah... A description of the famous Western Powder Nazi. The worst place for them is Snowbird. They own the mountain and you have a lot of nerve being anywhere near where they want to go on a powder day. I've traded elbow shots more'n once on a traverse right after they dropped the rope. I'm usually 6" taller and 100 pounds heavier so I invariably win in that exchange. I ski Killington. I'm a master at full contact skiing.

the last time i was there i almost got into a fight. so now i would just rather go to snowbasin on day 1 and 2 then out to pow mow on day 2 or 3 for some meadow skipping. i have also had a lot of fun over at sundance.
