Reading through all the comments in that reddit thread, it makes me think of essentially something similar to a tree well, except due to gaps between boulders instead of around a tree.

Boulder fields with 20' drops to another boulder. The problem is when you get heavy snow you can't see what's down there. Ae you going to hit a snow pillow on a rock or what's in between?
Like walking int the woods and you see an old foundation. Then you fall into a well. It still happens today.
He froze to death. He was in there from like 4:00 PM and found around 12:00PM.

I know there's never a good way to die but that's a particularly shitty way to go.
