What do you love about the place you call home? What do you hate about it? What would you change?

Me:
Changing seasons and like minded people. Mountians out my back door.
Lack of liveable wage jobs.
Nothing.

I live in Dudley, because it is the location of my family's homestead, dating back to just shy of 250 years ago. The house has been there for that length of time, and I was more or less the only viable choice to live there with the ability to restore and renovate the house to a condition that would do a structure of its historical importance and sentimental value justice.

I like the landscape, the access to 140 acres of farmland and free firewood, and being close to my family.

I don't like the fact that Nichols College is so close and trying to expand beyond the carrying capacity of Dudley Hill, and that good mountains and skiing is so far away.

If I could, I'd go back in time and encourage Captain Nathaniel Healy to settle in Vermont or New Hampshire.

Or go back to the appropriate period of time and convince my ancestors to convert to Mormonism so we landed out in SLC.

Plenty of culture, things to do, everything is within a few blocks from home, great medical facilities, proximity to local skiing (within 1-2 hours), NYC and the shore.

It's still Philadelphia. And it's a stone's throw from Camden, NJ. :(

Public trans upgrade and improved service, the cost for what you get is obscene.

I live in Stamford because it's close to my job.
Home is Boston, because it's where I like to be (and has the added benefit of being where my wife usually is)

I live in Brooklyn.
Most of my client/potential client base is in NYC. There is a large # of ad agencies and magazines here.
The city is wonderful and I meet people from every corner of the globe and all walks of life here, so much to learn living here.
Honestly though, if I were able to make a living doing what I do, somewhere in the mountains, I would not hesitate to pick up and go, I feel humans aren't designed to live in concrete jungles, they just adapt to it.

I live in Southern Rhode Island and and love the beaches. I'm here for my job! It brought me here, and I'll be here until I can afford to go elsewhere. I hate that I'm so far from the mountains and skiing in the winter. I also hate the politics and backwardness of the State as a whole. It's the caboose of the train of enlightenment! There are too many things to change, I'd rather move!

It's where I make money....

I enjoyed going to college in Vermont for the skiing and skibumming for two seasons in Montana..but at this point..I don't want to start over with a new job and new life so I'm content doing what I do..and getting a decent amount of vacation time for mad steezy ski trips..

Pros about where I live: 17 miles to Blue mountain ski area, family in the area, lots of good food, an hour from Philly, 1.5 hours from NYC, 2 hours from the beach..

Cons about where I live: far from big mountain skiing, lots of crime, it's too freaking warm and doesn't snow much, people are more conservative..it's not like Vermont where everybody smokes weed..

I live along one of the most beautiful rivers in North America , dotted with over 1800 islands . My small town around 10,000 is relatively close to Ottawa and Lake Placid and the Dacks ,and has a fine regional medical center. So our need for a beautiful environment and affordability and decent support services coupled with a good job hit our intended target

As a retired Unversity official and educator this area has 5 colleges , cultural and sporting events and a lively mix of interesting people-- plus the townspeople are REAL , friendly and some are quite "colorful personalities " Homes are reasonable.

What don't i like : Well , we do have some state prisons and a facility for sexually violent predators in the region and that has caused an impact on the social fabric of the region while providing some with employment . Another issue is teh provincial nature of teh politicians in teh region -- most lack any semblance of a long term vision and often opt for short term fixes -- sound familiar ????

So if i could change anything id' create a mountain with at least 1500 vert a mile from my home ( most skiing is an hr - 90 min away ) I also like to see a return to more effective political leadership at the local and regional levels

I live in southern NH. Close enough to still work in Boston, the mountains are close enough to get to easily. I'll move further north in 15 to 20 years.

why? My girlfriend moved out here, I came with and brought my job (I telecommute).

good? A lot closer to big mountains, only 10min from downtown culture but not really in a city environment, skiing year-round if I'd like

bad? The seattle "freeze", biking/pure ice climbing/trad rock are actually farther away and harder to get to, lots of good friends back East, no seasons in the city

change? bring more EC transplants, move closer to the mountains (could be done, but I'd be farther from my GF), a snowy xmas in seattle

I grew up on the South Shore of MA, moved to Lowell and later Chelmsford when my parents split up and my Mom moved to South Carolina...

The area I'm in is right down the street from my fencing club where I spend a lot of my time, so that is a huge pro. My friends (a majority of whom are fencers) are all close by so that is also a huge +. My job is only 20 minutes away.

Cons are:
Far from family.. My dad's in Quincy, Mom and brother are in South Carolina, the extended family all lives south of Boston (at a minimum).
Mountains are far, not out of this world far, but far enough that 'quick trips' for a couple of runs are out of the question.

Life is a series of decisions and compromises.

I'm happy where I am now, but there are a few things I'm debating changing.

If I had the power, there would be big mountains and great skiing everywhere. Spread out the herd and make it easier on everyone to get out there.

My wife and I both found jobs here right after college. There are much more opportunities here vs. Western Mass; where we both grew up. We love where our house is located. Quiet, but close enough to the stores and shopping. We can make it to southern VT in aronud 2hours. We'd love to have a small place up there some day to visit on the weekends.

Likes:
I can hunt right out my back door, can let the dogs roam, my golf club is 3 miles away, my job is 8 miles away, and skiing is less than a mile. Guess it boils down to all my likes are here and I don't need to travel. We don't have Mnt's but rolling farm hills as far as the eye can see. Adks are only a 2 hr drive north. The Finger Lakes region of NYS is amazingly beautiful with the change of seasons.

Dislikes:
People are losing jobs around here everyday------one of our major employers just laid off 150 people yesterday.

Change:
Simple, bring back the jobs.

You feel like you're trapped by your job?

HA, that's an interesting question for sure.
I was a 45 ton press mechanic in a South Jersey factory for a LONG time, that was trapped!
The local comm coll had some photo courses that I took, saw a window and went for it!
Sold most of my stuff, moved to NYC, and dove right in, sink or swim.
My job is awesome! I love it, I photograph people who have done great things in their lives and I am able to express my artistic vision and get paid for it, no two days are the same, I have traveled to amazing places, it really suites me well.
Given where I came from there is not a day that goes by that I am not grateful for how lucky I am.
Then there is the other side of me, when the leaves on the tree outside turn colors, I start to feel trapped, yes.
My pref is to have a large home, dogs running around, be surrounded by nature, mtns, ect.
Not to be in an apt surrounded by more cement then good ol dirt.
To be honest, there is not much else I am good at though (professionally) except taking pictures, and if I may say so, I'm very good at it.
All in all, I would say I am a pretty happy fella.
Sorry for the long winded response but your question got me thinking.

Evil, I think I know you !

I live in Northern Michigan, but the lower peninsula. Lived here since I was born, and really enjoy the amazing things this area has to offer.

I'd love to move to the mountains, either east or west.

What would I change, nothing much. Its a pretty darn nice place to Bee!

When we were looking to buy our house, we had originally ruled Summit out as "un-obtainable". We landed in Summit for several reasons.

Good
We bought this house for way under it's value, so I'm also looking at it as a long term investment. Summit has a good school system, if we decide to have Root Jr someday. Driving all over Northern NJ to different data centers, it's pretty convenient for me. All of my primary sites are 1/2 hour drive. Secondary sites are less than 1 1/2 hours. Queen has a good ride to work as well, no traffic. We have a nice peaceful neighborhood with a good amount of trees in the backyard. I also live within walking distance to the community pool, which helps get me through the summers.

Actually, everything is just about 1 1/2 hours (or less) away. NYC, Philly, Blue Mt or the beaches.

Bad
Taxes

Change
I would have preferred to have settled a little further west of hear, say in Long Hill or Gillette where I think you get a little more "bang for your buck" as far as property goes. If given the opportunity all over again, I'd still probably have moved here.
