Here's a useful list of faux pas from around the world that can be found on wikiedia.

I haven't been through all of them but scanned the countries I'm familiar with; it seems right on target.

Here's one of my favorites from America:

Calling a Southern person a "Yankee" will be taken as an insult. Baseball fans in the Boston area may also find the term offensive due to the intense rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees baseball teams. This rule doesn't seem to apply to the British, however, to whom all Americans are "Yanks". It should be noted that many younger Southerners would generally not take serious offense but are more likely to respond with puzzlement, since to them, it should be quite easy to tell if someone is from the southern or northern United States.

I would def take offense to that considering I can't stand the ny yankees.

Arab countries

* Throughout most of the Middle East the left hand is reserved for bodily hygiene and considered unclean. Thus, the right hand should be used for eating. Shaking hands with one's left hand is considered an insult.[1]

^ Very true ^

Looks like someone is having another boring Saturday.  :)

You're telling me, Andy. I spent all of last weekend making a 150 question exam that is due on November 20th. I've graded everything that needs to be graded. I did this all in anticipation of skiing with everyone this weekend. I'm bummed, but trying to keep it positive on AZ as we're all bummed. To think, I could be on a lift right now with you drinking from a flask. ;)

Being from philadelphia I find it a huge faux pas when people think a philly cheesesteak comes with sauteed peppers. NO PEPPERS!!! Just onions.
Anyway...maybe that doesn't fit in this thread-maybe it's more of a pet peeve.
Whatever I'm wearing shorts in november and there's no snow at whiteface my brain is working right.
Oh- and Beano I take it you're a teacher- please don't ever complain to your students about having to grade things. If it's that bad to grade stuff just don't give the assignment. As a student nothing drove me nuts more than when a teacher complained about how long it took them to grade the exams.

I eat cheese steaks with peppers, mushrooms and onions. Of course, I don't call it a philly cheese steak, just a shaved steak sandwich or something.

Other than that, I think in nearly all civilized cultures, it is still a faux pas to walk around in your yellow smiley face boxer shorts only.

Don't ask how I know.

I don't recall complaining about grading. Thanks for the tip anyway.

I actually threatened a prof with legal action when it took him over 5 weeks to post the final grade. Besides the fact that the dean (whom I am friendly with for all the wrong reasons) was on my side telling him that they will support me, the whole endeavor worked out fairly well on the whole threateneing thing.

I don't think I'd qualify such a culture as civilized. If you can't wear yellow smiley boxers, then what can you wear?

mmmmmmmmmmm cheesesteak with wiz...

I don't like when I'm sitting at the bar..by myself..and there are three empty seats to my left..and three empty seats to my right and a random patron comes in and plops right down next to me...the same for a bus when there are plenty of empty rows..

I also don't like when people don't spread out on a 6-pack chair if there are only 3 riders..all sitting to the one side..making the chair lopsided..

Oh yeah and my swimming teacher in high school who would go into the locker room and chit chat with us while we were changing..freaking perv..
