I play for a post collegiate club team in CT. Most of the players are coaches or have been playing since they were knee high. The officials that do our games take a lot of crap. People question calls, give them a hard time, and in general don't cut the official enough slack for officiating a game solo. Most lax games have 2 or even 3 officials doing a game. We were chatting with the official before our Sunday game. He seemed like a nice guy. He has been officiating for many years and does the top notch CT HSs games and even the semi-pro leagues around the North East.

So here is where it gets interesting. We were trying to clear the ball from our defensive end when one of the opposing players interfered with our goalie. That gave us a free clear. It was a close call but most people felt the official was correct in his call. The ball goes down the other end and a similar play happens. The official DOES NOT call interference this time and the opposing team's goalie starts getting on the officials case. To a degree, most officials in our league will listen and if if gets out of control, throw a flag for conduct. Instead, the officials whirls around, points his finger at their goalie and screams "shut your mouth." At this point the goalie and the official are in a all out screaming match. Both teams start side conversations as this is happen. The consensus is that the official is unprofessional and this is the most bizarre thing we have seen in a long time. Just when we think its dying down they start screaming at each other again. All this is happening while the girls HS team is waiting to take the field. The official walks off the field and tells us to officiate our own game. He then has second thoughts and comes back to finish the game. We score another quick goal and the official taunts the goalie by saying "was that in, was that a goal?" The game ends and both teams are left scratching their heads.

What do you guys think? How would your react in the moment? Would you complain to the the officiating governing bodies about said official? Have you ever seen anything like this before?

Was there prize money on the line? If not, then everyone was getting way too emotional over a game. Aren't games supposed to be played for the fun and enjoyment?

No prize money on the line. And yes, most of the players know that this is our opportunity to have fun and keep playing at our advanced age. ;-) I'm not defending the goalie in question, but we were pepping him with shots making his morning pretty rough. I'm sure his reaction has something to do with this.

My belief is that the official should have penalized the other team for unsportsmanlike conduct and stopped there. He was screaming aggressively at the goalie and threatening to walk off, called everyone in the league cheap for only paying for one official per game, and walked off the field before having second thoughts. Before the game the official was joking around with us and told us how he took 75% of his pay at the last game and left the rest of the money on the field (literally threw the money on the ground) at the end of the 3rd quarter and told them to ref the 4th quarter on their own. Another big problem is that HS kids were witnessing this happen. The players need be good sports, but the official is being paid to be unbiased, fair, and professional.

I'd complain about the official. It's one thing if a player gets upset, but officials need to be professional at all times.

If I saw any outbursts from an official at any of my kids' soccer games, I'd complain...there's just no place for it.

I played club lacrosse for about 12 years. Never had any problems with officials and had alot of games with just one. Most of the games were very clean with the rare exception against teams of mainly HS players. The question is why are you giving the officials crap maybe a quick comment but you should be playing for fun.

The clear solution is to fire the guy and hire me. My calls go to the highest bidder.

For 1.5 hours of officiating we pay the official $150. Many of these guys do multiple games in a weekend and maybe a game or two during the week.

Our squad does question the official at times. But many of us are coaches and are familiar with the right way to work an official over. The team we played against on Sunday is comprised of non-coaches.

And I agree with about most problems starting with HS kids. This spring league is for guys 30 and up. The summer league I play in is full of college/HS kids and the mouthing off is out of control.

EVERYONE has bad days...maybe this was just one for the official.

I must say though....you, as players, shouldn't be questioning the calls very often. That's what you're paying him for. Personally if I was the ref, the opposing teams goalie would've been riding the bench the rest of the day.

You are right. Both teams felt that the right thing to do was penalize the goalie or throw him out. The ref didn't have to loose his cool like that.

Sounds like the goalie was sleeping with the official's wife. And the official just recently found out.

yeah, that is a little nuts. first thought that poped into my head was what did the goalie say to the ref to really piss him off?

and the ref should be fired, walking off the field in two different games in not a good thing.

it probably wasn't just what the goalie said. most teams ride the refs a bit but do it in a polite mature way. there really is no way ONE ref can make every call. and to be honest, sometimes they can be talked into a call. but other teams, like the one we have been talking about, are jerks about it and can get on going at a good clip. i think the goalies reaction was the last straw.

what is a swimming ref responsible for? i would assume watching the start and finish. maybe to ensure proper stroke? proper stroke is important.

I know you must be kidding.

If not, wait until you have kids and they start to play in organized sports leagues. I can tell you from experience that these people are as serious as a heart attack about winning.

No, not this time (for once). And hopefully, I'll die waiting before I have a kid, and if I ever did manage to father a slimy little runt, it'd probably be as uncoordinated and terrible at team sports as I was/am.

I wasn't questioning that they were competitive, I was questioning why, and saying they shouldn't be. Unless there was something more important on the line besides pride.
