Is it too early to start a "2009 Season Goals" thread?

For me:
25 or more days skiing.
Ski Colorado <preferably as part of a biz related trip>
Attempt at least one of the Ski Sundown Mogul Comps
Ski at least 2 new mountains in NE (don' t know which yet)
Get son to ski better <hard to define, but i'll know it when it happens>
Get daughter to be able to ski NE black diamond
Finally land a helicopter <360 for you younger folks>

2009 goals... Hmmm....

I guess my first goal is to finish my diet and fitness program that started last August 1. I just crossed the halfway point for weight loss. I should start the 08-09 season much lighter and in much better shape than I started the 07-08 season. Ride my bike to work most days. Row my dingy. Hike up and down at least 1500' of vertical once per weekend. Gunstock or elsewhere in the Belknaps if I'm at home. Around KMart if I'm there. Some easy stuff farther north in New Hampshire a few times.

My second goal is to ski as much next year as I did this year. I logged 59 days plus a Chile trip this August. As a weekend warrior with limited vacation time, that's about the limit.

My skiing, as always, is a work in progress. My stance is too closed. I'm a 1960's and early 1970's Stratton skier. Tough to fight your roots. I have the fatal flaw we all have to some degree that I get tired and bend at the waist in the bumps. I'm also working on commiting to the fall line in steeper trees.

I also want to start dabbling with an AT/Randonee setup. Boots & bindings mounted on a spair pair of powder boards.

Lose 35-40 pounds by the time the season starts (time to start riding my bike to and from work, 31 miles/day.)
Ski 60 days. 50 is a must. (19 this year)
Weekends at 5 new mountains.
Land a helicopter, maybe a 360 mute grab.
Run O.L.- no stops
Ski Julio (haven't skied trees in years.)
Make it to the second day of the Bear Mountain comp
Do both Sundown comps, hit up one more eastern mogul comp (4 total.)

I believe strongly in stretch goals. What fun is life if you don't push yourself?

Tick Dodge's Drop off the to do list
Summit bid for top to bottom skiing on Mount Washington
Ski Smuggs (for like the fourth year in a row  )
Hit the Chic Chocs for some spring corn

At least half of those goals should be attainable if I plan ahead. The first two are somewhat more dependent on conditions and weather.

*lose 40-45 lbs by 11/15 (which for some reason I have picked as the start of next season)
*learn to ski bumps, even if it's not pretty
*get my confidence back that I lost after my knee injury
*25 ski days
*Get up to MRG and out west at least once in the season
*learn how to land small jumps (those accidental jumps were the cause of my injuries this past season)

My goals:

1.) Achieve more than 30 days worth of skiing. I got 30 in last year and this year and I just can't break that 30 day max.
2.) Hone my skills even more and get into the bumps/woods more.
3.) Hit 400,000 feet of vert (this and the 30 day thing are difficult with school 4 days a week and work the other 3)
4.) Finally get to the Loaf and Tucks

I'm sure there are a few others, but those are the ones that really stick in my head.

Would you consider Dodge's the most 'extreme' mainstream named run on Washington?
No. Technically, not even close base on reports of others and my observations. But a lot depends on conditions and snow setup as various runs can be worse than others at different times of the year and depending upon snow depth and fill in.

conditions aside, what line would you think would get the most votes? What's the most difficult/technical you've personally skied?

Personally, the steepest I have skied has been The Lip but that is hardly technical aside from being steep. July 1st skiing and worrying about falling off a 10 foot drop onto rocks or not falling under the snow arch is about as technical as I have gotten on Washington. The climbs up have been more technical than the ski down for me.

In the Tuckerman area, Duchess and Empress are two runs that look pretty darned technical and the entire center headwall and icefall area of the headwall with its mandatory airs dropping into 50+ degree slopes is more technical than I care for at this point. There is lots of stuff in Huntington that was skiable this year that looked rather technical. Whatever would get the most votes certainly wouldn't be getting votes from the most experience. Not sure if people would consider Pipeline to be Washington since it is really off of Clay but the GG area also has some technical stuff. I haven't really gotten into the really technical stuff so I am not the best judge. I do know though that some of these runs I have looked at and shaked my head "not yet"

I'll just go with my standard seasonal goals for next year

1) Run in the Hartford 1/2 Marathon in mid October (that will generally assure me that I'll be in 1/2 decent shape for ski season)

2) 40 Days (I had 51 this past year)

3) Ski on every day of the week (means I've taken atleast 1 full week of vacation)

  • Get my second born out on skis in spring of 2009 after she turns 3.

  • Take a Mogul Logic clinic with Babic at Sugarbush.
  • Ski MRG a few times.
  • Get to Whiteface.
  • Return to Sugarloaf?

Yeah, I've heard Huntington is much more hardcore than Tux. In additional to the technical aspects of some of the runs, I'd imagine the greater danger is there are fewer people over there to assist if you got yourself into trouble. No idea when the below photo was taken, but it looks like theres a few top to bottom chutes in there that I couldn't even dream about skiing.

70 days again. Might be tough with 19 credits next semester.
Chics Chocs again. Probably only one trip though.

That's about it except for Mt. Washington lines.

  • Dodges
  • All of Duchess (only did bottom half)
  • Dead end gully
  • Central (only did the bottom 2/3rds)
  • Diagonal
