It's always fun to look back at these threads and see how you did.

  • Get Abby to continue to advance with her skiing.
Yep. Started her with poles this season. Definitely made progress.

  • Get my second born out on skis in spring of 2009 after she turns 3.
I got out with my 3 year old a lot more than expected. She did great this season loading the chair and showing lots of enthusiasm.

  • Ski with my wife more.
Just a couple times, but we had one really great family day at Sundown this season where we were there all day.

  • Log 40 days.
    Should make 47.

  • Improve in the bumps.
    I like to think so.

  • Consistently nail a twister-spread.
    Not even close.

  • Be competitive in both Sundown bump comps.
Well, let's see. I qualified for both. (seeded 11th out of 20 for the January comp and 15th out of 42 for the March comp). I lost to a chick during my duel in January and then to Bart (placed 2nd in January) in March. Not sure if that's considered competitive or not, but whatever. I had fun both times.

  • Take a Mogul Logic clinic with Babic at Sugarbush.
    Nope.

  • Ski MRG a few times.
  • Get to Whiteface.
  • Return to Sugarloaf?
Nope, nope, and nope. Had plans to hit Stowe, but March bombed up north so I opted to stay local and ski spring bumps all month.

Overall, I'm happy with 2008-09. You?

My goal is to participate in the 2009 bump comp at Sundown so Greg, bvibert, and MrEvil will stop picking on me.

Well, I participated in one of the two comps. I feel satisfied with this season. Wish I could have grabbed a few more spring days but that's life.

Is it too early to start a "2009 Season Goals" thread?

For me:
25 or more days skiing.
Ski Colorado <preferably as part of a biz related trip>
Attempt at least one of the Ski Sundown Mogul Comps
Ski at least 2 new mountains in NE (don' t know which yet)
Get son to ski better <hard to define, but i'll know it when it happens>
Get daughter to be able to ski NE black diamond
Finally land a helicopter <360 for you younger folks>

done.
Hit seattle instead, i'll call it done
done x2
fail
done, lots of progress for jake this year.
done
fail

Lose 35-40 pounds by the time the season starts (time to start riding my bike to and from work, 31 miles/day.)
Fail
Ski 60 days. 50 is a must. (19 this year)
I'm at 89 now.
Weekends at 5 new mountains.
Fail
Land a helicopter, maybe a 360 mute grab.
Fail
Run O.L.- no stops
That's just stupid, in retrospect. I don't know anyone that can do that.
Ski Julio (haven't skied trees in years.)
Poached it yesterday
Make it to the second day of the Bear Mountain comp
Fail
Do both Sundown comps, hit up one more eastern mogul comp (4 total.)
Both Sundown, BMMC, and HV

I believe strongly in stretch goals. What fun is life if you don't push yourself?
Overall I'm happy with this year. Made some good progress, went from skiing by myself every probably 16 out of 19 days last year to pretty much skiing with someone at least a little every day by the end of the year. Much more of a social skier this year, which makes it a ton more fun. Didn't do a heli, but got a triple twister, which is the same degree of difficulty.

not so much goals for next year as goals for the summer. I have a gym membership, actually i've had it for almost 2 years now. I'm gonna use it for once. Build up the my leg muscles to try to take some of the strain off my knees. i'm built like a stick figure and do absolutely nothing for excercise really. For years it was no problem but i think age is finally starting to catch up with me. Things dont just work as easily as they used to.

Other then that, my modest goals are

Get to MRG.
Sack up and enter the BMMC.

I think i've listed both of these as goals for the last 4 years. the first shouldnt be a problem, the second sounds fine now but i never have the balls to do it when the time comes.

Go to the gym. I'm rolling on the floor over here. wtf was that all about.....

Get to MRG NO
Enter BMMC NO

I'll just go with my standard seasonal goals for next year

1) Run in the Hartford 1/2 Marathon in mid October (that will generally assure me that I'll be in 1/2 decent shape for ski season) Missed this one due to a chronic, nagging, stupid shin splint Arghhh!

2) 40 Days (I had 51 this past year) Check, 55 days!

3) Ski on every day of the week (means I've taken atleast 1 full week of vacation)Check, everyday of the week and the full vacation week thing! ;)

2 out of 3 isn't bad, especially since my miss was an off snow goal rather than an on snow goal!

My only personal goal at this point is to get back out on skis. MRG, Magic, and Sugarbush are on my must ski list as are the Sundown bump comps.

Getting my daughter out on skis is a definite this year. We putzed around a couple of days last year, but I hope to get her out more and that she'll be old enough to pay attention. ;)

I got to Magic and Sugarbush once each, never made MRG. :(

Only got my daughter out one time. :(

*lose 40-45 lbs by 11/15 (which for some reason I have picked as the start of next season)
*learn to ski bumps, even if it's not pretty
*get my confidence back that I lost after my knee injury
*25 ski days
*Get up to MRG and out west at least once in the season
*learn how to land small jumps (those accidental jumps were the cause of my injuries this past season)
I don't want to talk about it.

I almost got 25 ski days. And I did some small jumps. And a little bit of the bumps. Some confidence back. Some other goals I failed miserably on, though....

Once again quit my job in the fall-in a blaze of glory this time. Ski 100 or so days while working for myself. lot's and lot's of planning between now and then.

Well I'm probably going to only end up at 80 or so days but did accomplish working solo and cherry picking all the best days. I need to get out daily next year.

2009 goals... Hmmm....

I guess my first goal is to finish my diet and fitness program that started last August 1. I just crossed the halfway point for weight loss. I should start the 08-09 season much lighter and in much better shape than I started the 07-08 season. Ride my bike to work most days. Row my dingy. Hike up and down at least 1500' of vertical once per weekend. Gunstock or elsewhere in the Belknaps if I'm at home. Around KMart if I'm there. Some easy stuff farther north in New Hampshire a few times.

My second goal is to ski as much next year as I did this year. I logged 59 days plus a Chile trip this August. As a weekend warrior with limited vacation time, that's about the limit.

My skiing, as always, is a work in progress. My stance is too closed. I'm a 1960's and early 1970's Stratton skier. Tough to fight your roots. I have the fatal flaw we all have to some degree that I get tired and bend at the waist in the bumps. I'm also working on commiting to the fall line in steeper trees.

I also want to start dabbling with an AT/Randonee setup. Boots & bindings mounted on a spair pair of powder boards.

I started the 08-09 season in really good shape. Daily spring skiing tailgate BBQs from the first week of March onwards have my clothes fitting a little snug at the moment. I have a few friends who are saying the same thing. Starting May 3rd, that issue goes away.

I skied Chile. I easily broke 100 ski days.

My stance is still too closed. From film taken of me, I seem to have the "bend at the waist" issue under control. My friends are commenting about skiing the trees fast so I'm doing a better job of commiting to the fall line.

I didn't have the cash flow this winter to load up on ski toys. The AT/Radonee setup is going to have to wait for another year.

Steeper, deeper...

....with more technical descents on bigger and bigger terrain. And, as always, chewing as much pow as possible, being the pow pig that I am.

Valdez in '08 and Cham/Val d'Isere '09 pointed the way to seeing possibilities and meeting personal challenges I only dreamed about before. Everything I do at my local area (Sugarbush) is geared toward taking those skills elsewhere on the planet and applying them to ski objectives that previously seemed to not be in my realm of possibility.

The Bush Pilots program at Sugarbush has been an incredible program for me. It is an adult off-piste focused program that challenges and teaches on a seasonal basis. John Egan and the fine folks at the VT North Pro Team (and shop) push, push, push all season long. Mix that in with the X-Team/Skiclinics.com trips I've taken where I've gotten stretched beyond my self-imposed boundaries, then brought back into my zones more confident and skilled, and, well, my skiing has just gotten better despite middle age and the appearance of 50 on the horizon. Skiing has finally become a journey toward growth and skills, and not a Holy Grail destination/award type of thing to grab, for me.

Improved mental and physical toughness are always on my mind. Hard charging attitude tempered by risk assessed caution and respect for the true boss....the mountains and mother nature.

The image below is an 1800 vertical, 45+ degree shot from Val last month. I want more of that...

100 ski days..I slacked this year with 98 days due to wussing out on a few rainy days..

Lots of days at Stowe..

Lots of days at Jackson Hole...

Utah

Some sort of spring trip out west..maybe A-Basin..

Summer ski trip if I don't blow too much coin during the ski season..

New carving skis and new powder skis..

New Ski jacket..

Just have fun and post reports for everyday I ski..

Lots of days at Stowe..well 6 days was decent spread over 3 trips..but I will confess that my best east coast day was at Sugarbush on February 21st..da da da deep and staggered openings are the bomb deezy. I went to Jackson Hole and got dumped on twice but it did take me 25.5 hours to get there. I don't know what I was thinking with all the spring and summer trips but all my bills are higher than they were a year ago except my Internet/Cable and gas..but I did get new powder skis..and I had fun and posted alot of reports. I can't say this past season was my best season or even one of the best seasons but it was really fun!!!!!
