Stowe on Halloween morning

Report is a couple days late but I had to find a new host for my pictures this winter...since I graduated from UVM over a year ago they are finally pulling the plug on my Zoo account. But rest assured, all is well now for another winter of photos, haha.

Friday morning saw us pulling into the upper Midway lot at around 8am. Temps were crisp in the upper teens to lower 20s, but I figured there was an inversion as usually happens this time of year when the temperature rose a couple degrees as we climbed up RT 108 to the resort. Snow cover still looked muy bueno but there were significantly more tracks than our dawn patrol the day earlier. Thursday late morning and afternoon must've been busy up there...but I love this time of year when the lifts are quiet and the place is still packed. There's an enthusiasm for the upcoming season and camaraderie with people who you haven't seen since the snow melted in May. High-fives are thrown and everyone's in a great mood when it snows in October.

But Friday morning was different. Only a couple cars in the lot and no one in sight. It was much calmer than the circus on Thursday. There's nothing more peaceful than watching the sun slowly climb higher in the sky over fresh snow on Halloween.

My accomplices on this day were Sara and Jordan. Always a pleasure to have company to share these days with.

A beautiful skin track on the side of Nosedive made for easy skinning and I made great time...

The other two were bootpacking and taking a little longer so I spun a quick lap on the last steep pitch of National where Midway cuts across. Midway is a great access road to the Front Four if you're skinning. Skiers left of National had the freshes tracks but man had these trails been hammered on Thursday. There were borderline moguls in spots...its astonishing but yet great to see so many people getting out under their own power.

Skinning back up Nosedive, I ran into this telemarker who was absolutely ripping it down the skiers left side of the trail. There are few things in life more poetic than big, snow-spraying GS tele turns. I need to learn how to do that.

This was near the section of ND where Cliff Trail intersects, and up here the wind had actually refreshed the snow surface; tracks had been mostly filled back in and the snow surface was a very dry, wind-blown pow. It skied like cold mid-winter product.

Ironically, my camera batteries died at this point (should've charged them after Thursday) so the only action shots I have are those two of the unidentified teleskier. Our descent was quick but extremely fun. I was starting to get into the flow of things again, too. Doing back to back ski days in October is fun stuff and it reminded me how much I love skiing 5 days a week during the season. Skiing is just too much fun to even consider doing anything else from mid Nov to early May.

Till the next time it snows,
-Scott

You can always use us. That way you get the snazzy AZ watermark, and I get free advertising after everyone hotlinks your rad pics all over the interwebz. ;)

Thanks for the report.

Ahh, so that's where everyone gets the AZ watermark. Thanks for the link, Greg. I'm looking through it now and might just have to post some pictures there this winter. Its also worth supporting this site, I like the community you've got over here.

That looks like a really good hike and ski. I had the day off Friday and was cleaning up leaves. What a difference a few hundred miles makes. Again, great TR and pics. Thanks for posting.

There's a quota, but I might be swayed to bump yours as needed... ;)
