Week 3 started on MLK day, so the hoards were taking over Pats when Roark and I got there at 5. Ben had already beaten us there. We took a few warm up runs, and I ended up crashing pretty hard and landed my ribs on something in my pocket, probably bruising my ribs. UGH. This didn't prove to be a problem for a few hours thankfully, but today i'm paying for it!
Anyway, onto the races... All the groomers were home for the evening, so the course was a mix of ruts, powdery bumps, and "interesting stuff" I think we must have slipped.. errr. plowed.. the course something like 3 times last night to try and smooth it out a bit. We were all complaining quite a bit about it before we actually ran it, but after running the first set, I was pleasantly surprised at how fast the course was.
I paired with Roark again, and I took the right hand course (yellow). About 3 gates in, he goes up into a cloud of snow. I looked over just in time to see him pop out of the cloud of snow, heading face first down the rest of the slope. Got to the bottom, proceeded to go back up the chair, only to have Roark fall off (who does that!?) His excuse was that his poles were down (to sit on them) and at the wrong angle.. whoops!
The second run went a little smoother for us, but not so much for a few other racers that evening. We witnessed quite a few crashes the second round, including at least one that took out a gate, one that hooked a gate, and a painful looking one that got ejected from the rut on the outside of the turn on his back.
Raw time scores (overall before handicap): Seth 3rd, Ben 8th, Erik 15th, Scott 49th, Kingsley 52nd, myself 57th, Will 63rd
AZ team place: 4th.
