Favorite small to midsize mountains

Our skiing days our pretty limited when we make our trips to the northeast, so we mostly stick to the major resorts. This year we did ski Gunstock, and several years ago hit the mighty Butternut, but these are the only 2 we have been able to hit. This year we drove past Pat's Peak and Granite Gorge in NH. In the past we went by Hickory and Oak Mountain in NY. And Elk and Snow Mt. in PA. These look like interesting places I wish we had time to check out.


What are your favorite small to midsize mountains? Or do you just go to bigger places since they are right there? I love checking out new areas, if we lived up that way I would try to hit them all.

Elk Mountain in PA is quite good. A solid 1,000 ft. vertical. No high speed lifts yet. Rates for 08/09 were $53/weekend, $45/weekday.

I'm gonna add Shawnee Mountain in PA. That's where I learned how to ski. Awesome little place, but super slow lifts. Has an old-time feel to it.

I also think that we need to clarify what small/midsize means as there a couple of hills with 2000+ verts listed, and while out West that may be "mid-sized" not quite sure that constitutes "mid-sized" in the East

Hickory has been closed for years. The current owner is a businessman from Texas. There has been talk about Hickory opening back up as soon as this season. I hope so, it would be a plus for ADK skiers.

Smuggs has been mentioned too. I'd consider it to be at least a mid-size mountain, but probably a big.

After years of letting this place run down new ownership finally started putting money into this place. They put on an addition to the lodge, and some new trails with more good stuff to come in the future.

It has a great location, right off the Northway, exit 18. It's close to Albany, Saratoga and right in the Glens Falls area so it's close to alot of people.

I consider small to be sub-1000K. Sundown wins that one, hands-down. Medium I consider 1,000-2,000K and at that size I like Magic, BEast and Mount Snow best, in that order. I consider 2K+ as "large".

i did mine on 1000-1500/small. 1500-2000 medium , Over 2000 large

As an aside, how is Gunstock?
