Trip Report: My second day out for the 2009-10 winter season! After I left my home in New Hampshire and just before getting onto Interstate 93 it dawned on me that I left my jacket behind. So of course I had to turn around and retrieve it. Arriving at Sunday River at 10:30 with clear blue skies and a temperature of 55F and climbing, I thought thank God I turned around and got the jacket!
Booted up in the parking lot (and let me say that for the second week in a row I found a spot in the first row!), and headed right for the Locke Mountain Triple. The line was fairly long, and I paired up with a rider. The lifties were letting every third chair go empty to be loaded at the mid-station. Top to bottom was attainable with a 30 yard or so walk to the lift.
First run was down T2, it had a lot of snow, small bumps on skiers left, and on occasion some corn snow! Easy to sink your edges in and easier to attain some speed. Decided to skip the mid-station and took Lower Sunday Punch to the bottom. In the morning it had SC with less coverage at the end. As the day went on the last 200 yards became a slush mudslide fest.
First five runs were down T2 and then I made the switch to Upper Sunday Punch. Wow was I missing out! Great SC and almost nobody on it when I descended it. Began the rest of my runs with USP from then on.
After taking a few runs with a SR regular we almost took a hike over to Barker Mountain as Jungle Road looked like it had descent coverage.... but realizing how hot we already were, why make more work! Plus, even though it was only 1:30, Lower Sunday Punch was in total flat light and my legs were starting to tell me that it is only the second day of the season. Decided that was enough and to go home and get ready for next week.
Two thumbs up from me!
