some speed demons on here like to spit game from time to time as to how fast they go.....or claim so...and yelling at slowpokes to make way
so- if there was a speed gun...like the ones at a carnival that shows how fast your pitching is...
say they rigged it to a straightaway....
would you see how fast you could go?
test your meddle?
would you do it ?(putting aside insurance problems)
whats the fastest you ever skied...or thought you did?

Just take ur GPS out on the hill with you. But only problem is you have to look at it somehow to see! I have not done this yet myself, because I really don't want to know. I would rather think I am hitting 50 when its only 25.

droid has a program

I check my speed all the time. I don't go nearly as fast as i thought. What I figured was 50 is more like 30. I give credit to those gs racers now. %0, 60 mph must be scary!

Sure, I'd try it out. I'm thinking if they did set something like this up, it would be on somewhat of a closed course. They wouldn't put it on a pitch on a heavily skied trail.

I know on a CLEAR trail just free skiing I'll often avreage 25-30 mph (Canyon at Mount Snow is basically 1 mile long, 2 minutes on the watch to just free ski/cruise it when it's wide open) Probably max out these days in the 40-45 range free skiing based on my previous info. Is there more in my "spped tank" then, yup, however that's usually when that little voice of reason in the back of my head starts to kick in and tell me to ease up a bit

Did the Jay Peak downhill one year and I was clocked at 63 mph. That's the fastest I've ever gone and I will admit, it got scary. I was only on 188 cm all mountain skis and they got quite squirrelly. I also got my ass kicked! The winners had speeds around 80 mph that year

I was in a downhill a few years back and got clocked at 72 mph. I think I have skied faster than that when I didn't have to go thru the course. On the other hand, I didn't have a course crew keeping the trail clear. I still have a pair of 223cm volkls with derby flexs and bindings that go to 18. On nice spring days it is still fun to "Enjoy the Blurr."

I have used my GPS quite a bit. I am not a fast skier. I discovered that there is not much difference between feeling comfortable at 35 mph and being scared at 40. Just 5 mph makes all the difference.

I had a couple of friends who thought if I could go 35 that they could easily go above 50. Neither made it above 50. Going fast is harder than most people think.

Then of course are the guys who can really rip. Anything above 50 is really flying.

Me and my buddy did this on bikes at Attitash last summer, it was fun. We had a radar gun and took a couple of runs with it...

I can't ski 55...oh wait...yes I can......

The local hill I grew up on in western NY used to run a speed trap during their spring carnival weekend. They set it up under the chairlift between the towers and the woods. You had to sign a waiver. It was about 15 feet wide.....no fence......no padding on the towers...nothing. I have a certificate somewhere that shows I went 55.XXX MPH. They used the race team timing equipment over a measured course. I was on 170 cm Lange LR foam core skis....and I was 14.:-o They only ran it on the lower section of the hill. Some guys on the race team took it from the top and only hit 65 MPH. Of course, this was before they invented lawyers. 55 felt pretty fast and pretty scary. Props to you guys that went faster. I'd try it today on a pair of 220-something DH skis if it was set up somehwere saf'e'ish. Like Haynes at Jay when groomed out.
