I just got back from hiking to the top of Magic. There's lots of work going on. There was a grass cutter mowing in front of the base lodge and when I got to the black chair there was a new person working on it. He said he used to work at Ascutney but it closed so now he's at Magic. I told him I was going to hike up the work road because I didn't like hiking in grass. He told me Magic Carpet was cut low and was clear so I decided to go that way. Up at the top of Vertigo I ran into Matt and Todd who just finished fixing a leak. They said they had fixed quite a few and had some more to go. There will be snow making on trails that haven't had it for years. The view from the top was amazing. The trees are turning really early this year. I hiked down Broomstick which had been weed wacked and when I hit Black Line there were 2 workers weed wacking the top of it. I haven't seen this much work going on this early in years. Let's hope for a great winter.

Say what you want but there certainly is a lot of energy to get things going again. They were able to push their numbers up last year and they have a good number of shareholders signed on. It's easy for us, including me, to be "armchair resort operators" without knowing what is going on. The vibe certainly is good for Magic. Jim Sullivan has kept his word and has focused on the operations and getting things going.

I'm going to try and get some trips going up there from my club this year. Spread the word, one person at a time. It's like a trail. You don't know how good it is until you're up close and personal, then you keep saying, "why did I wait so long to try?"

Awesome! The news of the work on the snow making is just stellar. If Magic can lay down a base and get skiers to the mountain on non-powder days, it will thrive. Consistency and dependability are the only things that depress Magic's potential skier visit numbers. If you blow it, they will come. For sure. Also, it really helps to have a 2' base under that first big pow dump of the year.

This.

For the short term, making the point that people can depend on Magic will go a long way to getting folks back. People are craving a real experience instead of fake towns at bankrupt real estate developments.

I'm 90% sure I'll be at volunteer day #2. If not, then I'll definitely make the third one

X-post from TGR.

Saturday was the 1st official volunteer day @ Magic. We arrived Friday night just as the sun was setting & set up camp. Unlike last year’s monsoon the weather was supposed to be beautiful all weekend.

If any of the Magic crew see's this man up there this year, buy him a beer or 10, he earned it.

We lit the fire Friday night & cooked up a little feast in preparation for the next day.

All in all one entire tree came down, too many to count overhanging limbs trimmed, new glade cut, great food, drinks, friends, etc.

I'd like to thank everyone for an awesome weekend. Matt & crew are really kicking some ass this off-season. The mountain has never looked better.

Apologies if this should have gone in the TR section, no one is looking there right now.

Not sure Bill but you'll be happy to know the new glade is on the tamer side from what i've heard. I did not get over there. Our crew, well mainly my buddy Bob (tree expert) was working on overhanging limbs on the Black chair.

I suppose it would not hurt to bring it. Thanks!
