Is there anything that can rival SR in Maine?

Really depends on what you want. For some yes, for me no. Sr combines, Terrain, length of season and slope side lodging, reasonable drive with a nice town and good local transportation service. That is why I made it my home mountain. I love the loaf as well.

Both Saddleback and Sugarloaf would easily 'rival' it. I would say it is between those three (SR, SL, SB) for the best mountain in maine, depending on what your criteria are they all have their strong suits. All could also make somewhat of a legitimate case for best in the East, although that is obviously highly contested by many different standards.

I love the terrain at Sugarloaf and Sunday River. The lift system at Sugarloaf really sucks. I HATE that you have to take that stupid Timberline quad to get to the summit. 2 extremely slow lifts to just ski the expert runs from the top. Why can't they at least just put a surface lift in from the top of spillway to the summit?

I'm not sure how you get to the top, but I take SuperQuad and then Timberline. The former is fast (without taking into account standing in line).
