how is hanefer, utah as a week long lodging option?
i may get a week long timeshare lodging as a gift and trying to figure out if this is a good location to get to some of the slopes. a quick google tells me that there are quite a few resort options within an hour driving distance, but:
- is this area safe?
- does rt 80 or access roads close off if significant snow falls?
- do i need chains?
- food shopping near by?

i am planning to rent an SUV from the SLC airport.

thanks.

Had to look this up, small town. Park City areas will be your closest. Looks like you could reasonably get to Snowbasin/PowMow without having to touch the valley. Not the best location for Cottonwoods but it can be done easily. I have no Idea on the grocery shopping other than you can drop into the valley.
If its a gift then yeah, go. It actually seems like a quiet central location. Be very very careful if driving out of park city with the police. Witch hunt!

if you hit snow basin (and i'd recommend it) be careful skiing too close to any ski instructors. Also make sure you check out the bathrooms in the lodge.

I moved to SLC this summer and have never even heard of this town......

As to other questions: I-80 is a main thoroughfare from SLC to Park City and through to Wyoming. It is the "transcontinental" interstate. That said, the section from Foothill Blvd through Parley's Canyon and up to Park City gets nasty, congested (it is mainly two lanes each direction), and has bad weather. You will need snow tires and 4WD, especially if you plan on venturing out of Park City and up Little or Big Cottonwood Canyons (assuming that we FINALLY get more snow). We can get from our place in SLC to PC in about 25 minutes, but it is all uphill.

UDOT will temporarily close roads for avi control, but they stay on top of things.

Park City has a ton of shops, including a Wal Mart, so you should be fine.
