So I was wondering if anyone on here has ever use some kind of battery operated or charged heater for their car. I want to buy one so next year if I get a pass I can sleep with out freezing my but off in the car. Has anyone ever had a heater they could recommend? I really appreciate any advice?

There are external vented propane heaters that need might work for a van. You need a wall surface to mount it on. Not so much in a car. Look into the RV/Marine market. Taylor, Force 10 and Dickenson are names I've seen. Webasto and a few others make diesel heaters for Tractor trailer sleeper cabs, but you're talking like 6 grand, and you'll need a way bigger battery. I'm not aware of a cheap Home Depot solution. Unvented combustion heaters are certain death. Given the cost/risk of doing this, an inexpensive hostel type room looks way better.

This one plugs into your cigarette lighter. The downside would be that extended use could wear down your battery.

A good winter sleeping bag does the trick. It was about zero when I started my night near Smuggs and I was plenty warm with my zero degree bag on a Ridge Rest pad. I actually slept from about 915 to about 715 with a brief half hour interruption when security mad me move from the parking lot. Very comfortable nights sleep.

is it common to allow people to sleep in their cars overnight or do they usually give people a hard time?

Last year I saw people camping in Plattekill's parking lot. Not only did they not give them a hard time, they posted a picture to their Facebook page.

I never tried sleeping in the mountains parking lot. I always go to Walmart or supermarket in town. When I was younger with my K season pass I sleep no problems in my car. Not just one day in _10 and I couldn't fall asleep at all, but my sleeping bag was only 40* one.

We used to do it at Jay (Subaru ski and stay package :)).

A good sleeping bag is key. A girl and a dog help too! We would usually go out for late dinner and drinks or just drive there really late. Then you're starting off well into the night with a warm car.
