Personally I like this move by the NFL to play the Superbowl in an outdoor stadium in a "cold" weather city!

Some of my most memorable Patriots games I've been too have been in cold weather when the weather was crappy (snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, wind, digging my seats out from 18" of snow, etc). I just hope that when game day rolls around in just over 3 1/2 years that the Meadowlands is getting hit with a good 'ol Nor'easter! :snow: Now that would make for a great Superbowl in my book! :)

I agree.

I also think that all new stadiums being built should be open air. I've always felt that Domes were a joke.

I feel the same way about baseball even though that game can't be played in rain.

Both are outdoor sports and should be played in the elements.

Generally agree with the open air stadiums - the only real exception to that I could possibly justify would be for teams like Tampa and Miami (possibly Houston too) where the concept of sitting in a ball park when it's 90+ with the humidity right there too, and then throw in the real chance of PM pop up t-storms day in and day out all summer long doesn't exactly make for a pleasant fan experience - so atleast give a retractable dome for place like that!

in the 44 year history of the super bowl, no home team has ever made it.

Wouldn't karma be amazing if the were Jets/Giants? (with the Jets winning)

hey, I can dream can't I?

Well you figure that that Stadium has the best odds of having a home team play in it, being the only stadium used by 2 teams, personally I'd rather see only one of the "home teams", the giants play in that game, with the other team just having to make about a 200 or so mile drive down I-95 from Foxboro :)

I like this move a lot. I don't love the quote by one of the mucky-muck's at the NFL saying, "We'll just have to pray for no snow".

Also agree that some of the most memorable games I have watched have been when the pats are playing in a down-right blizzard. (2001 AFC divisional playoffs vs. the Raiders for one) I think it would be awesome.

I heard something on the radio today they were planning on adding a dome to the stadium in a year or two. Shenanigans? Perhaps.

I hate this move. I think New Orleans should be the perpetual Super Bowl site. ...or at least alternate years. My criteria for a good Super Bowl host is that the city cannot have an open container law and you need to be able to walk from bar to bar in shorts & tee shirt with a cocktail in your hand.

Along these lines, and I know that the NFL (atleast publically kind of has to) has some issues with the gambling, but someone really needs to build a world class stadium in Las Vegas!

Put the superbowl on basically a 4 year rotation, with Miami, New Orleans and Vegas having 3 of those 4 years and then move it around the 4th year - that would be a fan friendly rotation to say the least!

Awesome post! I think Dr. Jeff did a good job expanding upon the idea.

I get the fan perspective.

From a pure football stand point, I think the idea of a winter bowl is pretty cool. I tend to side with that argument as I'll never be at a Superbowl. Well, unless some corporation I'm working for sends me, but other than that, the game is unattainable for 99% of the fans out there.

I'm definately rooting for snow. They were going to put a roof on the old stadium too and you see how far that got. Remember New Jersey is broke.

I'm surprised at this decision. I can't remember what year, but IIRC the last cold-weather Superbowl was in Pontiac, Michigan and it was in a snowstorm. The stadium was domed and the game went off OK, but a lot of people with $$$$ tickets couldn't get there. That was when the league said "never again".

I'd add that the Super Bowl showcases US football to the world. You want to show off the speed game that is only possible in warm weather on a dry surface. You also want to show off cheerleaders wearing the least amount of clothing possible. Unlike regular season games, the dome gives no home town advantage with crowd noise so it is an ideal neutral location. A slush bowl in DirtyJersey in February is absurd. I hope the weather is bloody awful so the NFL never makes this mistake again.
