Hi, my name is Andy, I'm a gaper.

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Nah, you're not. Matter of fact you've got bigger cajones then most. You skied Tucks, and thats an accomplishment. I'm still hoping to do it. Maybe in March I'll go up with you.

As for GAPER. Best definition would be to see my face staring down some of the runs at Jackson Hole. Although it does encompass many things. The way you dress, carry you're skies, how you ski. Too me it's a BS term invented by people who think they have it all figured out and have always. I would prefer to help someone out who is in over their heads than stand there and laugh at them. One day you might be in the same situation praying for some help.

I'm not a "gaper" in my own backyard...
But I was called a "gaper" in Jackson last year.. when before turning, I side slipped for about a meter into a chute under a chair.. This chute was pretty friggin' steep - and i was being super cautious on entry.. By the end of the week we were bombing it with no stop...

The single piece turquoise jacket is a sure give away. In fact, almost any "day-glo" color can designate a "gaper". Some of the most common atrocities? Magenta, aquamarine, tangarine, lime, etc. This, in conjunction with an exposed forehead, (a "gap", where the word "gaper" comes from) between the goggles and the hat (or in the example below, some sort of crudely made indigenous head covering), is an easy way to spot this rare breed from the lifts.

Beginner in skiing

It is also a term for beginners on a downhill skiing mountain, generally coming from either Texas or California. Many mountains have a "gaper day," where locals to the mountain dress up as beginners. These people over estimate their skiing ability and have a "yard sale" as they spill their gear down the mountain slopes.

I feel like a Gaper in Jackson Hole since my jacket isn't 500 bucks and my skis are less than 100mm wide..lol
