I can't believe it, last year I had shoulder surgery, recovered enough so I could ski last year. Found out last week I have a herniated disc and I'm going in for a steroid injection tomorrow, DAMMIT!!!
I have no idea the amount of rehab/recovery needed, but I am guessing that my skiing season is shot before it began. I read about Greg having this done, but it was done in June, I am just bummed to think now that I've got back into sking (and mountain biking) that both have come to an abrupt end.:uzi:
AUUUUGHH!!! Ok.. vent and self pity party is done.

That sucks, sorry to hear it. Nothin' worse than an injury right at the start of the season. I know that all too well.

Where is your herniated disk? You'd be amazed what a good physical therapist and lots of work can accomplish. Plus, those things can be wierd. A few years ago when my back flared up badly, I could barely walk, but I could rollerblade fine with no pain. Stay positive!

Thanks. That's the wierd thing, I went riding for about 7 miles on the sunday after turkey day, it felt fine during the ride, and not much different after. But back then it was just like my left leg was asleep, now I have the fun of severe sporatic pain. Catches ya when you ain't lookin.

That was me that had a herniated disc. I did the steroid injections and got imediate relief. Mine was the L5 disc that was bothering. Severe left hip and leg pain, and when it wasn't paining, it was numb. I was back to full activities in about a month and a half. The first injection helped about 75%, the second finished the job. I am a mechanic and abuse my back, but no problems since. In physical therapy they gave me some back strengthening exercises that I do every day religiously and every thing is fine. Your whole season shouldn't be shot unless you have complications. Good luck. I have been skiing 6 days so far this season with no problems.

Thanks for the positive vibes. I hope this works, and it's good to know that you will pretty much know one way or the other almost immediately. I really hope this doesn't end a season early, but if it does, it does. And I'll come back stronger next season.

When I got my injections, I didn't feel a bit of discomfort. He used a live xray to guide exactly where he wanted the inj. to go.The Doctor that I had did an awesome job. I found out when talking to him that he helps out on the U.S. ski team.

If these injections are anything like what my former boss needed for her osteoarthritis, you should be feeling better pretty quickly. But I believe there is a limit in the # of times you can have them.

In any case, wishing you a speedy recovery!

They told me that you could only take three. Thats why after 2 I waited to see what happened. I wanted to save the third in case I had problems later. Fortunately 2 did the trick anyways. Hopefully I won't have anymore problems. I will keep my fingers crossed and keep on livin'. I will think positive thoughts for you and I!

I know how you feel. I had 2 herniated @ the l4 & 5's......I had 3 shots which helped only a little bit...I couldnt get my leg/hip to stop burning with pain. Finally I had surgery @ the end of august....the major pain is gone, but there is still definetly pain, and there's no way I could ski right now....well, not the way i want to. My point is avoid surgeryunless all else fails....cause then your season is def shot. I'm praying that mine won't be....tryin hard with the PT. Everyones back/injury is different.....GOOD LUCK.

Had the injection yesterday and there is DEFINITELY a decrease in pain and an increase in mobility. It turns out I have several bulging discs, degenerated and herniated. I'm scheduled for a 2nd shot and they did say I could ski this season but no crazy stuff (which I never do anyway). Long groomers for me in Jan/Feb!!! Thank you all again for the good wishes, and I want to get PT underway asap so I can strengthen my back. Good luck Bless, and you're dead on right, every single injury is unique as will be the recovery.
Maybe I'll hit Okemo or Sunapee for a nice slow ski later next month :D

thanks guys......I'm glad the shots helped you. I found mine to help for about 3-4 weeks(even that, only a little bit) and then it was back to severe pain. I wish you the best.....

:angry:Ok, 3 days after the injection and it's rapidly declining back to pain and numbness, my doctor won't call me back and I am beyond livid. Clearly my 07-08 ski season is shot, I just want to get this fixed asap so I can at least ride in the spring.
Steroid injections did NOT help me for more than 1 1/2 days. dammit.:uzi:

Calm down! Give the shot time to work. You probably felt immediate relief due to the other drug (litacaine, something similar). I will not bore your with my back troubles but let me say that I have L4-5 and L5-S1 problems, however my pain does not go into my legs. I have herniated and lesthesis of both and my pain can be very bad, can't walk for days a t a time. Well, I have been in treatment for over 2 years now and have improved dramatically but treatment still goes on. I have consulted many doctors and each has told me you can get more than 3 cortisone shots (heck I lost count of how many I have had now), my pain doctors (Arnold Pain Clinic in Boston) have been great, my orthopod (spine specialist) has said treatment can continue as it is working (longer time between treatments). I have found that one of the keys as stated before is doing what your PT will teach you. My problem started from not strectching properly through out my sports career and playing injured. So learn what the PT teaches you, it will help. Go with their plan and do not try and get back sooner than they want you too. You will get better! If you work near Waltham, I went to ProSports Therapy and worked with Sarah, she is a spine therapy specialist and I recommend her highly. Keep your head up and remember this is your spine, take your time and you will be back.

Just as an FYI, I hurt my back in Aug. of 05 and skied 2 days in 06, last season I ended up skiing about 6 days and mountain biked most of the summer of both years. I do have to take it easy and do my PT after each but at least I am back at it.

Good luck with your recovery and give it time!

Jamie

Thanks, I do appreciate the advice, but the dr who administered the injection said it would be better as time progressed (3 - 5 days) noticing gradual decrease in pain and numbness, I am going the opposite way of that. I know that surgery is in my future, I just want it over with and on to rehab. I work in Marlboro, but live in the Dedham area. Hopefully I've worked with a PT clinic in Marlboro and they were really good. I just don't want to fuss around with PT, then shots then more PT only to find out I needed surgery the whole time.
