My brother did that last year in Oregon, but the sand was very fine and dry and without any grass. It was okay as long as you did not fall down. I will ask him if he could e-mail me some pictures if you are interested.

Hampton's? Robby Moe?

I'm in the Bell Harbor/Rockaway area .... My father in law (Strong Viking Type) would Ski Cross Country all the way into Far Rockaway and back witch as little as an inch of cover. Incidentally he passed away in Norway doing what he loved best .....His had a heart attack on a lift and died on the Mountain before patrol could get there.

You gotta just do it. That would be a trip and you're gauranteed first tracks! You can always send your buddy Terry down first. I'm sure he'd be up for it after a few beers...

Sand skiing is very intriguing. I've never been, but here are some pictures I found on the web.

Sand Skiing

A mouthfull of that "powder" must be a real treat! There are sand dunes like that out west. Utah has an area with dunes hundreds of feet high. Families go "four-wheeling" out there. Erosion is not an issue because the winds are constantly recreating and reshaping the dunes.

Hey ALLSKING,please don't encourage anyone to ski down the north shore bluffs. The erosion problems are really terrible there. My family used to own property in Wading River for about 35 years and we shared rights to about 1100 feet of private beach frontage. As little kids we not only ran down the bluffs, but also up the bluffs. Now that was a WORKOUT! Anyway, over time, our property owners association realized that the bluffs were eroding very badly, and so we went to a lot of trouble and expense to stabilize them and prevent access at the tops. We had two sets of steps. The lower ones, which led to a parking area at the top were 54 steps and the higher ones, at the other end of the property, were two sets with a total of about 85 or 90 steps. As a teenager I must have done them about a dozen times a day at least! BTW, the north shore "sand" is really a much coarser mixture of sand and rocks. Not soft and smooth like on the south shore of LI. It does not pack down as hard and makes it a real challenge to use a vehicle unless it is a "true" 4wd with locking differentials.

I know I know..But hey I paid for part of that beach grass..I want to ski it  Its really soft sand under that grass not to many rocks.I do think it would tick to many people off if I went and skied it though. I will tell you what though the next blizzard we get I am going to make some turns down the bluffs. :D With a foot of snow it should be ok.

I suppose that would be OK if the sand under the snow were fairly frozen.

Don't forget trip possibilities next season!

I have boarded the Kitty Hawk dunes in N Carolina back when there was open access to it.

A few tips:

-Rock skis are a MUST
-Put your weight WAY back (think of it as dry slush)
-Get some speed before you start making turns, you need to be cooking to set an edge.
-Stay hydrated
-If it's steep enough, hop turns can be mega fun, just anticipate a stronger loss of momentum then on snow, and adjust balance accordingly.
-If you are @ the beach make sure you are carefull with the plant life. Often what seems to be dead weeds are actually enviormentally important, some places will hand out heavy duty fines for damaging them.

Can't wait to see pics, have a blast.
