Whats ASRA?

American Ski Racing Association...a travelling beer league..I want to run the GS course on Dot Nebal at Belleayre sometime..it's like 37 gates..lots of ex-European racers,,very humbling...but I'm less into racing than 2 seasons ago..it robs me of my precious vertical...I want to hit 3 million vert this season which will be tough but possible..

Never could understand that... But - hey - to each his own...

If you like to ski fast...and you like to ski alot of runs..and you like to ski non-stop..and you like high speed lifts..and you have a head for numbers and statistics it makes sense.

In 1995-96 I used an Avocet watch and skied 48 days and 1.7 million vert. Back then a typical weekend day at Blue was from 7:30AM-5:00PM...young legs..

In 1996-97 I skied 66 days and had my record vert of 2.66 million..yes I averaged about 40k per day thanks to Blues high speed quad and ski trips up north to NY and VT

Then I went to college in VT and skied woods alot and stopped tracking vert because it wasn't apples to apples with skiing down an icy groomer or bumps..Then after college I spent 2 seasons in Montana as a skibum and only kept track of days..

Then I discovered www.paskiandride.com and saw that they had a database where you can put in your runs, vert, and other notes each day. So in 2005-06 I skied 110 days and over 2.2 million vert..and this past season 119 days and 2.4+ million vert..not many people in PA or in general ski that much but I'm lucky the local hill is open till 10:00PM everynight. I skied alot of days in the rain..and if it's really pouring..I still make myself ski 20 runs(about 3 hours). I take my skiing seriously,,,I don't care that much about technique or equipment..It's all about getting in a tuck and bombing down..

My favorite place to ski is Jackson Hole and I spend about 9 days out there each winter in late January, If it's a powder day or I'm skiing with my Montana buddy...I only get about 20-35K of vert but if it's a solo hardpack day..I bomb the groomers at Mach 12...that's how I got a 56K+ day there two seasons ago and a 61K+ day this past season..with 37k before lunch..24 hours of Aspen..here I come..:daffy::daffy::daffy:

If anyone is interesting in finding out more about the ASRA league check out www.skiracer.com

Great group of people and we always have fun wherever we go.

The new schedule should be posted soon.

Cool, the great thing about Blue is that they open at 7:30AM on weekends..and they have two high speed lifts which service most of the runs.

I last skied Elk in 1995..the slow lifts and 2+ hour drive have scared me away..I'd rather drive an extra hour and be at Belleayre..or just go to VT..

Elk is worth the extra half hour past most of the Pocono mountains, though it's another hour past Blue. Elk has the best snow and terrain in Eastern PA. May have slow lifts but slopes become less crowded and because Elk doesn't get the traffic the other PA mountains do, the lift lines are about the same or shorter than anywhere else.

I hadn't skied Elk in 25 years up until a couple years ago and really liked it. Yes, you can head up to the Catskills but that's yet another hour + away. To me, Catskills is too far for a day trip but Elk is doable.

Is Elk the place off of I-81 between Scranton and Binghamton? I've driven by that area several times. Just a bit over an hour from my home, so might check it out as a day trip some time.

When I was in college (early 80's) we skied at Denton Hill. Don't remeber alot about it other than they had one trail that had a pretty steep little headwall. Do remeber it being alot of fun though.

It seems like there's alot more people from NJ on here than PA..it makes sense since NJ..at least the northern part is so affluent and closer to NY/New England than PA..

I lived in the south western part of the state for a spell. While I did miss it AT ALL, I got by skiing Seven Springs. The North Face actuallly had some decent trails with 600 verticle and consistent pitch. I will say, while the skiing isn't anything special, the people at Seven Springs definitely know how to party.

Word.

Starting to develop some good trees.

My home mtn til March.

I'm a pass holder at Jack Frost - Big Boulder primarily for Jack Frost which has some good steeps, trees and great snow. I'll hit Boulder in mid April and right after Thanksgiving when everyone else in the area is closed. I also get my days in at Elk Mt which is just over an hour from home. If I were a bit closer to Elk, I'd probably have a pass there.
