I'm planning to ski Cannon on Sunday. Their report claims that they got 2 feet of snow early this week. I certainly don't expect any untracked powder, but knowing that this mountain can get scrapped bare quite quickly (their snow making coverage has been less than optimal this season), I'm just curious if anybody has been there lately.

If so, let me hear about the real conditions up there...

Well, they opened Mittersill on Wednesday when I was there and it is already closed going into the weekend, getting an additional 5" Wednesday night into Thursday notwithstanding. So read into that what you will. It was suspect of them to even run it Wednesday, and I'm the last person to call out an area for opening terrain in thin cover.

Main mountain is well covered, though. Their claim of 184" YTD is the most suspect thing I've seen in a while. That is generally more than MRG's range of 142-211" and MRG has WAY better coverage (skied there the day before Cannon on Tuesday). I didn't ski the main mountain much so I can't provide much feedback there but I'd assume it should be respectable Cannon PP with maybe some typical Cannon thin coverage on natural trails like Mid Hard. Then again, I didn't ski there the last two days, so I am not up to date.

Was there on Wednesday (powder!) and skied mostly the main part of the mtn. Was able to find fresh tracks most of the morning. There is good coverage overall but I heard several people talking about thin tree coverage. While it snowed most all day it was windy at times and there wasn't much more accumulation over the nite before. It wasn't too skied off but there weren't many people.

The tram is closed for the season so keep that in mind. It makes some of the trails a pain to ski and i imagine will overload the smaller lifts on a weekend. Overall I'm not a fan of their lifts....short of the one high speed quad they feel slow and outdated.

Well ya know I'm a cannon homer, but I haven't been since last weekend. I will say this.... Yesterday I went to Bretton woods because I had a free ticket. It was AMAZING. Skied untracked 4-8" from 10 to close. You won't find that at Cannon. BW just doesn't get the powder skiers. I watched people consciously avoid the untracked all day.

With all that said, I'm heading to cannon right now.

It should be fine. I was there on Wed. and used the trails to get stashes. The trails were good except at the end of day heading to the car. The loose powder was now pow bumps and in between was the ice from the previous week but it should till in fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess, I'll just ski whatever is there, hopin for the best. I'm wondering if the today's wind will scour the top.
"Cannon PP with maybe some typical Cannon thin coverage on natural trails" - well said, rivercOil :)

Surprised to hear tram running....they have been posting its closed for season all week. Must be enough people there to justify it.

I went on Saturday. Conditions were fantastic. Had an 1-3" on Friday night. Beautiful day. I like when people bash the coverage/lack of grooming/wind at Cannon - makes it better for me.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHH! You are not suppose to say that in an open forum. What were you thinking?

Move along folks. The poster knows not what he is talking about. Conditions always suck at Cannon. It is cold windy and icy all winter long.

Cannon had more like 4 inches of very light snow up top on Saturday. The wind was blowing that light stuff around pretty crazy at times.Skiing was surprizingly good with just a few scaped spots in the usual areas.Sunday the wind abated but early on the goggles were getting glazed over.Sun please!Oh thats right, big sun right now of course cuz I'm not there.
