Am I the only one who thinks this is much ado about nothing. So the guy took a photo and won a pair of skis with it, big freakin deal. Sure Id be pretty pissed, but the original owner of the photo wasnt going to enter either contest stormchaser did. That point alone makes me wonder why he would even think about legal prosecution. Whats he going to do, sue a guy halfway across the country for the value of some skis? Itd cost more in travel costs and court fees than what its worth. Its actually kind of comical. Frankly, part of me only thinks hes actually pissed because the guy won something with the photo when he didnt even think to enter.
I want to be clear that Im not sticking up for stormchasers actions, he was a idiot. That being said, who gives a.... We all post photos online and this is the risk we run frankly by doing so. If you want to protect your work, dont post the pictures at all.
Sweet! Adiron - will you please forward me your address so I can come over and peruse the belongings in your house for subsequent sale? Perhaps there are some priceless (to you) family heirlooms or antiques that you have no intention of selling or making money off of. If that's the case, I'm sure you won't mind if I take them and sell them for my profit. I can probably get a better price for them here in NYC, so I'm not sure it would make sense for you to seek any redress given how far a trip it would be for you. [/sarcasm]
Get off the pipe. What Stormchaser did was pre-meditated theft that any 6 year old should have been able to judge as being wrong. The fact that there are a few people who are actually defending his actions, or engaging in moral equivalency with the "don't post the pictures" argument, is a sad commentary on the state of our society.
