worked there for a winter and skied that particular trail more than any other on the mountain. It's got decent pitch, but never in my wildest imagination would I think a slide would be possible on it.

EC ski area slides that I can remember off the top of my head:

Sugarloaf have had a couple in the Snowfields
Sunday River has had Black Hole let loose
Killington has had Lower Ovation let go
Mount Snow had Ripocrd let go
Holiday Valley - don't know the trail, but I remember the pic
Probably a dozen others too

Anyone ever crack a big slide off on the EC?

Not a big one... no.

I was just about to say that.

Yeah, Marc and I cracked a pretty small one off. I was skinning, took a step forward, and the whole slope just cut out beneath my. I kind of flopped over on my side and slid about 30 ft. at a whopping 2mph. It was actually pretty fun. Avalanches rule!

Riding that avalanche in the pics would have been wicked extreme. Carry a little bit of speed, crank the DIN up, and yer good to go! Avalanche riding, the new coolest thing in skiing. Also, looks like after the avi there is a pretty epic cornice drop. Rad.

its funny because i thought the mountains on the east coast were too small save a few to have avalanches. let alone a resort in maryland. next time i go skiing im brining a shovel, a beacon and a probe

Will you guys chip in for my ticket if I show up with at some busy ski area (k-mart, okemo, mt. snow, etc) this weekend with a beacon strapped to outside of jacket, probe fully extended in hand, shovel hanging off backpack, full-face helmet, crampons hanging off backpack, and rope and carabinas on shoulder?

There are actually a lot more avalanches on the east coast than people think. Remember the warnings after the valentines day storm a few years ago? Major avalanche warnings all over the east coast ski areas.

I got flushed down Tusk in slough that propogated down into the snowpack, alone, thru the choke. That's one of those situations where the chute narrows so the snow accerates thru...took me for a ride maybe 100 vert. Friday after Vamentines day storm in the notch we cracked a big one off. Slid at the ground. We had a small slab break off and take a camera guys poles and gloves as he was setting up. I ski cut the next pitch and it went. As I was watching it go the hangfire broke free and almost took me. I body locked a tree and let it go by. Looked down and watched an insane spectacle. Boulders shot rooster tails of snow 30 feet high. Trees shot rooster tails of snow 30 feet in the air. Lasted for about 30 seconds. Deposition area was prolly 12-15 feet deep....more maybe. Crown was 4-5 feet. A killer for sure. East coast. Wooded terrain. Shit does happen. We reported it to patrol and they isseued the warnings on Noaa later that day. Lots of other stories that day.
Hell Brook has gone. A firend was burried there and was dug out. He got his hand out before it settled. Hourglass goes alot. Goat has taken people into the woods as well. Then there's the Avi chutes. Ussually it's fun when it happens, they are small and you can sort of play with it. Pull out of the gully and let it go by, then jump in right behind it before it scoures the line down to hardpack. Sometime it just scares you and you go to the shed for beers. Dawn Patrol MRG.
Hopefully we beat the changeover.

even the two days after the storm shit was letting go on some of the steeper areas. even with trees. the snow does some strange stuff with that much weight.
