Sadly, we had to put our Argentinian Mastiff to sleep this evening. He'd been getting wobbly for a few weeks, and last night he slipped on the wood floors and dislocated his hip. Surgery, aside from being up to $4K, had a less than perfect chance of working, if his blood work would even have allowed it. 3 months of recovery, during which, if we got him to walk at all, he would have favored the other hip, probably leading to it dislocating as well.

All in all, considering what his quality of life would have been, especially since he was 12, about 50% past his expiration date anyway, we thought it was the best choice. Doesn't suck any less, but still the best choice.

He had a great day yesterday, though. He got a bath in preparation for Thanksgiving, ran around in the yard playing ball and chasing our 2-year old (in a rare burst of energy), and had a whole pizza crust as a snack. A good last day to 12 years of living large, I think.

Cten , i am sorry that you lost your buddy. Pets especially really good ones add a dimension to our lives and often provide an island of sanity in a world that is often full of extraneous noise and turmoil .
.

... In due rime get another one , children raised with pets learn many invaluable lessons about life and how to extend caring to someone other than themselves ..

Thanks, everyone. Never fun.

Agree 100%, Warp- a friend pointed out that Jack was "our" dog, and our next one will be the kid's dog, which will great for them when the time comes.

Sorry for the loss.

I have two labs who are now 6 and 7. I find myself thinking more and more about how they are already halfway there. It's going to be horrible when it happens, I know. It's those little things I'm sure like how my yellow lab is constantly under my feet tripping me up and driving me crazy.

Sorry about the loss. The perspective on the next one being the kid's dog is a good one, that will be the same here. My son will probably be five or six assuming my dogs live a full life. he won't really remember them, but the next dog we get will be the one that is with him all his life.

That all of a sudden made me really sad to type that :/

My condolences.
My neighbors had a Mastiff- she was wonderful. They've since gotten another- different personality but just as good.

Sorry for your loss Cten. I also have a 6 yellow lab and you couldn't pay me to sit down and watch Marley & Me. Just not something I care to think about. It's amazing the bond people develop with their dogs.

Had several labs for over 3 decades AWESOME dogs , but now in retirement CATS are so much easier both from a daily standpoint and whenever we travel . On extended travel its easier for someone to just come in our home once a day to see id things are cool rather than multiple times and on 2/3 day trips the cat is self sufficient .

was NEVER a cat guy at all BUT now im sold ...... I'm LAZY and cats are independent ergo a good mix ;)
