I stopped at (insert name of ski shop here) where one of the sales kidz told me that Belleayre does not plan on spinning lifts next season. Just a nasty rumor I hope?

Probably some sort of rumor generated from more pending State budget cuts...

I googled it after seeing this thread and came up with a couple of things from late 2008 when the budget was going to be drastically cut. Maybe somebody saw one of those things and didn't notice the date.

what kind of income does it generate for the state?

wouldn't be the first time a short-sighted legislature ignores past investment to simply stop the bleeding going forward.

My guess is POSITIVE income, and that to a legislator is often the key issue with items deemed "non essential"

Without knowing his source it's all speculation, so here's mine: Last month the Phoenicia Times ran an eye-catching headline to the effect of, "Is Belleayre Closing?" As I recall, the article reported that the Manhattan Institute, a conservative, market-oriented think tank, had released a paper with many suggestions for balancing--i.e. slashing--the NYS budget, including privatizing the three state ski areas. (I searched for the P.T. article to post here, but they haven't archived it yet.) Here is the operative passage in the M.I. paper:

Ski Areas—The state owns three ski areas—Bellayre in the Catskills, and Whiteface and Gore Mountain in the Adirondacks—which compete to a degree with private operators. The Belleayre ski slope in particular, located with a few hours' drive of the New York City metropolitan area market, would be a prime candidate for a long-term lease to a private operator.

As you can see, nowhere do they suggest that any ski area be "closed," prompting the question why P.T. chose such wording for its headline. Such is how rumors get started.

To a non-skier/rider New Yawker I think this logic would make alot of sense in Albany. They have to cut alot out if you want the state to remain solvent or borrow the money from China, like the feds have been doing the past 5 years.

I'm generally against non-essential government run institutions, but they really do a good job managing that resort. At least from my customer perspective - no idea if it makes money. I've heard that they have to sell really cheap tickets to attract a crowd this year but that's probably not unusual in this economy.
