Resort or Ski Area: Berkshire East - Charlemont, MA

Conditions: Wind-Blown Powder/Packed Powder; Very Cold & Windy Day

Trip Report: I got out for a few hours after all the fresh snow we received over the weekend. I would have preferred to hit Magic's opening day today for more untracked powder but I couldn't swing that due to family commitments in the morning. I was expecting somewhat of a powder day since they reported 9" from Friday/Saturday's storm & 8" from Sunday's storm. What I got was a lot of windblown powder & crud. Don't get me wrong - conditions were still quite good & I had a great day. I just expected more soft, untracked snow than what I found.

Most of the mountain was open & I had a lot of fun. The best runs for me were Grizzly, Flying Cloud, War Dance, Blizzard Island, Hemlock & Wilderness Peak. I was not able to ski some of my favorite Berkshire East runs such as Liftline, Jug, Tomahawk & East Glades. Some of those gladed runs may not have been open today.

It was very cold & extremely windy today. Temp was 18 at the base when I arrived around lunch time. As the afternoon wore on, the temps got colder & the winds got more intense. The triple chair stopped numerous times due to wind & they eventually had to close it shortly after 3:00. I was going to ski Liftline but they closed the lift right due to wind issues before I was going to hit it so I was out of luck.

I then skied the runs off the quad, which I rarely ski. That was a nice change of pace. I had never skied Hemlock & Wilderness Peak & really enjoyed those runs. The Blizzard Island trees were in very good shape considering BEast had just re-opened on Saturday after being closed for several days due to lack of snow.

I skied until closing at 4:30 & was very cold as I headed into the lodge. All-in-all, a very good day in cold & windy conditions.

what a diff between Magic and BE. You must have had some blowing, cause there wasn't much at Magic. Really shows what being open during the storm can do to things. Now come the crowds!

Thanks for the pics, Jeff. Gotta get up there this year. Looks like they have a great base now. Hopefully the Christmas storm doesn't totally wipe it out.

Thanks for the report. I wish I could have joined you. The conditions looked pretty good.
